DEUTERONOMY 11 - Love and obey the Lord
NOTES BY VERSE
Note: each ** comment in this document is listed in numerical order according to the verse(s) from this chapter
** Moses reminded the Israelites how their children did not witness the Lord God's discipline and marvelous deeds; they were to teach their children from generation to generation so they will know the Lord, obey Him and so He would continue to bless them
• Love the Lord and keep His requirements (Deut 11:1)
• Observe all the commands (Deut 11:13)
• Be careful to worship God only (Deut 11:16)
• Carefully observe all the commands – to love the Lord, walk in all His ways, and hold fast to Him (Deut 11:22) <R1795>
Deuteronomy 11:1-2,5,7 NIV
[1] Love the Lord your God and keep his requirements, his decrees, his laws and his commands always. [2] Remember today that your children were not the ones who saw and experienced the discipline of the Lord your God: his majesty, his mighty hand, his outstretched arm; [5] It was not your children who saw what he did for you in the wilderness until you arrived at this place, [7] But it was your own eyes that saw all these great things the Lord has done.
Deuteronomy 11:13-22 NIV
[13] So if you faithfully obey the commands I am giving you today---to love the Lord your God and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul--- [14] then I will send rain on your land in its season, both autumn and spring rains, so that you may gather in your grain, new wine and olive oil. [15] I will provide grass in the fields for your cattle, and you will eat and be satisfied. [16] Be careful, or you will be enticed to turn away and worship other gods and bow down to them. [17] Then the Lord's anger will burn against you, and he will shut up the heavens so that it will not rain and the ground will yield no produce, and you will soon perish from the good land the Lord is giving you. [18] Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. [19] Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. [20] Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates, [21] so that your days and the days of your children may be many in the land the Lord swore to give your ancestors, as many as the days that the heavens are above the earth. [22] If you carefully observe all these commands I am giving you to follow---to love the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to him and to hold fast to him---
** God was clear that the Israelites were to obey God's commands so they would have future blessings and the strength to possess the land
• God would drive out the nations and bless the land when the Israelites obeyed
• They would, however, experience negative consequences if they did not obey
Deuteronomy 11:8-9 NIV
[8] Observe therefore all the commands I am giving you today, so that you may have the strength to go in and take over the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess, [9] and so that you may live long in the land the Lord swore to your ancestors to give to them and their descendants, a land flowing with milk and honey.
Deuteronomy 11:13-15 NIV
[13] So if you faithfully obey the commands I am giving you today---to love the Lord your God and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul--- [14] then I will send rain on your land in its season, both autumn and spring rains, so that you may gather in your grain, new wine and olive oil. [15] I will provide grass in the fields for your cattle, and you will eat and be satisfied.
Deuteronomy 11:22-25 NIV
[22] If you carefully observe all these commands I am giving you to follow---to love the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to him and to hold fast to him--- [23] then the Lord will drive out all these nations before you, and you will dispossess nations larger and stronger than you. [24] Every place where you set your foot will be yours: Your territory will extend from the desert to Lebanon, and from the Euphrates River to the Mediterranean Sea. [25] No one will be able to stand against you. The Lord your God, as he promised you, will put the terror and fear of you on the whole land, wherever you go.
Deuteronomy 11:16-17 NIV
[16] Be careful, or you will be enticed to turn away and worship other gods and bow down to them. [17] Then the Lord’s anger will burn against you, and he will shut up the heavens so that it will not rain and the ground will yield no produce, and you will soon perish from the good land the Lord is giving you.
Deuteronomy 11:26-28 NIV
[26] See, I am setting before you today a blessing and a curse--- [27] the blessing if you obey the commands of the Lord your God that I am giving you today; [28] the curse if you disobey the commands of the Lord your God and turn from the way that I command you today by following other gods, which you have not known.
** The Promised Land differed from Egypt, the land from which the Israelites came
Deuteronomy 11:10-12 NIV
[10] The land you are entering to take over is not like the land of Egypt, from which you have come, where you planted your seed and irrigated it by foot as in a vegetable garden. [11] But the land you are crossing the Jordan to take possession of is a land of mountains and valleys that drinks rain from heaven. [12] It is a land the Lord your God cares for; the eyes of the Lord your God are continually on it from the beginning of the year to its end.
** The land of Israel is God’s inheritance to His people for all generations
• God will bless the nation and those who live in it when they obey and respect His commands
• But God will curse those who do harm to His inheritance; the word 'curse' is equivalent to the phrase 'to think little of' <S187>
Ezekiel 46:18 NIV
[18] The prince must not take any of the inheritance of the people, driving them off their property. He is to give his sons their inheritance out of his own property, so that not one of my people will be separated from their property.' ”
Ezekiel 47:13-14 NIV
[13] This is what the Sovereign Lord says: “These are the boundaries of the land that you will divide among the twelve tribes of Israel as their inheritance, with two portions for Joseph. [14] You are to divide it equally among them. Because I swore with uplifted hand to give it to your ancestors, this land will become your inheritance.
Genesis 12:2-3 NIV
[2] “I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. [3] I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you. ”
Psalm 37:22 NIV
[22] those the Lord blesses will inherit the land, but those he curses will be destroyed.
** Jesus' command to 'make disciples' does not simply mean sending money to some missionary around the world but responsibly raising the children in our homes and neighborhoods in the knowledge of God; equipping and readying children to become saved and spread the gospel <N152>
• The majority of parents hand their kids over to government schools for 7 hours a day and think the 1-2 hour youth activity with combat this programming that happens during the week <G77>
• Some leaders, including John Dewey, admit to a secularist humanist (there is no God) agenda for the educational system
• Likewise, a UN mandated worldwide program has been underway since the 1960s to proudly nullify Christian values of right and wrong; they brag about nullifying in 15 minutes what parents have taught over 15 years
• There is no neutral ground in spiritual warfare; removing kids from government schools is the first step to instilling a Biblical worldview <N152>
• Don't be surprised if you send your child to Caesar that he comes back a Roman <B292>
• How crucial it is that Christian parents talk openly with their children about ALL issues from a Biblical point of view so the children don't end up thinking their parents are 'uninformed' when confronted by contrary values later on
Matthew 28:19-20 NIV
[19] Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, [20] and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
Deuteronomy 11:18-21 NIV
[18] Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. [19] Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. [20] Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates, [21] so that your days and the days of your children may be many in the land the Lord swore to give your ancestors, as many as the days that the heavens are above the earth.
** The Euphrates is one of the greatest rivers in the world. It flows from the mountains of western Turkey through Syria, and continues on right through the heart of Iraq, not far from Baghdad. It eventually unites with the Tigris to become the Shatt al-Arab and finally empties into the Persian Gulf. The entirety of the Euphrates flows through Muslim territory. In Genesis 15 and Deuteronomy 11, the Lord specified that the Euphrates would be the easternmost border of the promised land. It serves both as a border and a barrier between Israel and her enemies. <J103>
Genesis 15:18 NIV
[18] On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram and said, “To your descendants I give this land, from the Wadi of Egypt to the great river, the Euphrates---
Deuteronomy 11:24 NIV
[24] Every place where you set your foot will be yours: Your territory will extend from the desert to Lebanon, and from the Euphrates River to the Mediterranean Sea.
** God interacts with His human creation with different types of promise:
• UNCONDITIONAL promises - such as the promise to give land to Israel (Gen 12)
• CONDITIONAL promises - where people can receive blessings IF they obey His laws (Deut 11:27-28)
Genesis 12:1-3 NIV
[1] The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father's household to the land I will show you. [2] “I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. [3] I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you. ”
