It’s AWeSOMe! to Volunteer

Volunteers make the magic of AWeSOMe! possible. Volunteers provide essential assistance with ski lessons on the mountain, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing at Ponderosa State Park, and special events. We also depend on volunteer help in our ski office. Volunteer Here

Full Circle won Grand Prize at BANFF Film Festival Watch Trailer

About the Film: Faced with a traumatic injury that renders you permanently disabled; how would you reinvent yourself? In 2014, Trevor Kennison's life was forever altered by a broken back—for worse and for better, in equal measures. Barry Corbet, an intrepid skier, mountaineer, explorer, filmmaker, and Jackson Hole legend, broke his back in a helicopter crash in 1968. Frustrated by a pre-ADA culture that did not accept or support the disabled, Barry reinvented himself, becoming a seminal leader in the disability community. Full Circle follows Trevor on a path towards post-traumatic growth in parallel with Barry, 50 years later. Their stories mirror each other, connected through time and space by common locations and motifs; injuries in the Colorado backcountry, rehab at Craig Hospital, fame in Jackson Hole; but also, through their shared resiliency and refusal to let their passion for life be limited by their injuries. Full Circle is an unblinking examination of the challenges of Spinal Cord Injury, and a celebration of the growth that such tragedy can catalyze.

Summer Recap

July 25-29, 2023

AWeSOMe! assisted the National Federation for the Blind during a week-long Bell and Beyond Camp at Pilgrim Cove by providing recreational activities each day for
16 kids with visual impairments. They participated in kayaking, water games, team-building activities, a campfire drum circle, a cardboard-boat building and race, and a nature hike with huckleberry picking.

August 4-6, 2023

AWeSOMe! received a Move United grant that made it possible to partner with the Boise VA Medical Center to offer The Warfighter Kayaking Overnight Camp to veterans with disabilities. This was our first ever overnight tent camp adventure. The camp included: going to a concert at Brundage; kayaking the meanders; visiting Charlie’s Garden; and campfire stories. It was a true camping experience with everybody pitching in.

August 26-27, 2023

Our weekend Mountain Bike Camp was another AWeSOMe! first. It included riding dirt roads and trails. We camped overnight at the north end of Payette Lake and kayaked on the river. Be sure not to miss the opportunity to register for this program in 2024. Details will be available with the release of our summer programming line-up at the start of the season.

Fall Recap

September 29, 2023

In partnership with Toby’s Place and Courageous Kids Climbing, AWeSOMe! held a Pizza Night Party at Camp Pinewood for local families to learn more about the services available for people with disabilities in McCall. Pizza was donated by Toll Station Pizza in McCall.

November 1, 2023

We sent out a Survey/Questionnaire to all AWeSOMe! participants that skied/snowboarded in the 2022/23 winter season. Our goal is to seek feedback so we can continue to improve all of our programs. Additionally, we are seeking assistance from everyone to spread the word about AWeSOMe! to get more people involved in all the recreational programs we offer.

November 13, 2023

AWeSOMe! volunteers helped Brundage Ski Patrol with their annual Chairlift Evacuation Training, observing different roles of rescuers and scenarios in which the AWeSOMe! team may assist in a real chairlift evacuation situation.
