Dear Professor Malby

Thank you for your letter on behalf of the Ilkley Clean River Group dated 20 August 2018 following our meeting in Ilkley. I found it a useful discussion and I hope it helped clarify our position for you. As requested, here are our updates for you and the campaign group.

1. Maintenance I believe Emily has been in touch to arrange a follow up meeting in October. During this meeting, my colleagues will provide a detailed plan for the maintenance programme and an update on the infiltration investigation and the issues with the manholes. Unfortunately, it does not look like there is a quick fix to the manholes and as such we hope to have an update in October that we can share with you.

2. Upgrade to prevent solids on the riverbank Although there has been an improvement in the amount of debris letter following discharges, there will sometimes be occasions when debris bypasses the screen during storm events. As such, the outfall is checked once a week as part of our routine maintenance. If there is a discharge, we will also check the outfall and if needed, and if it is safe to do so, we will clean up any debris.

3. Storm Overflows Attached is the raw data for the event duration monitoring (EDM) that Emily has discussed with you previously. As you referenced, the units are not fully commissioned and as such they do not show the duration of events. There is also an issue with the data when the tanks are full as the readings bounce and cause the alarm to drop in and out. We would be happy to answer any questions or clarifications about the data provided either at the meeting in October or beforehand via email.

4. UWWTD As we have said before, Ilkley WWW is performing within the permit conditions which have been set by the Environment Agency. If you have concerns about the compliance with the UWWTD these may be best directed towards the Agency.

5. Bathing Water Status During AMP5 (2010-2015) we invested significant amounts of money in our coastal treatment works in order to comply with the revised Bathing Water Directive. This involved installing large storage tanks to reduce storm discharges, increasing flows to treatment and providing stormwater UV disinfection at Scarborough WWTW. If Ilkley is designated as a

bathing water, we will work with the Environment Agency to understand the implications of this and what investment is needed and plan this into our business funding cycle.

With regards to phosphorus removal, Ilkley WWTW is not in our programme for requiring phosphorus removal installation either this year, or during our next AMP. The Environment Agency advises us on the sites that require phosphorus removal based on the levels in the river.

6. Citizen Testing We'd be happy to provide more details about our assets upstream of Ilkley to support your investigations. We cannot export maps from our asset mapping system, but Emily will endeavour to provide a paper copy and answer any questions you may have.

Thank you for taking the time to write to me regarding Ilkley and for bringing it to my attention. As you are aware, I am retiring soon, and Liz Barber will be the new Chief Executive of Yorkshire Water and she will be happy to answer any queries in future. In the meantime, please continue to liaise with Emily.

Yours sincerely

Richard Flint Chief Executive
