Instructor: Martin Short (ms3256@njit.edu)
Summer 2023 | One Week Workshop | 9:00am-12:30pm and 1:30pm – 5:00pm Workshop Location: Weston Hall
WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:
Today’s in uential designers combine art, technology, and science to develop products that not only look good but also address the needs of modern consumers. In this workshop participants will experience what it is like to be a designer working on the forefront of these practices and how they relate to the challenges of our world.
The workshop will introduce and involve “design thinking”, a process that will take you from brainstorming to product concepts, and also “making”, a means of learning through building, proving concepts, and prototyping products. Students will learn about fabrication through traditional techniques and the use of state-of-the-art additive and subtractive digital tools and equipment.
The workshop will provide participants with an opportunity to realize their visions in physical form, translating their designs using design software and working with technicians to build prototypes through digital fabrication technologies including laser cutting and 3D printing.
PROJECTS:
During this one week workshop students will be working on two projects, using various techniques and tools, both digital and analogue. The projects will be an important vehicle to learn about design thinking and work ow.
Subculture Artifact:
Digging deep into a subculture of your choosing you will have the opportunity to design a product that speaks to the needs, wants and desires of that subculture as well as the values and mythologies it communicates. You will be introduced to research methodologies, modes of communication, aesthetics, and physical prototyping techniques.
Planar Construction
3D aesthetics and function will be explored through planar relationships and the interplay of material and light. The student will instruct technicians that will laser cut materials such as plywood and polymer sheets, and thermoform plastics to create your own unique functional and evocative light xtures.
Fieldtrip:
Museum of Modern Art, NYC
Exhibition
The workshop will culminate in a gallery exhibition of your creations. All participants will work together to curate and assemble a group exhibition for invited parents and guests. Participants will have the opportunity to display and demonstrate work and receive feedback.
