After School Enrichment Spanish Language Exposure Course-part of OST

Course Objective:

The World Language Virtual Hubs is an initiative geared toward providing more valuable and equitable learning opportunities to students throughout our district. Any student in 7th or 8th grade who is excited to take Spanish and is capable of making the commitment to attend class is a good candidate for this course. Students will be able to advance one sublevel or a full level on the ACTFL language proficiency scale. Participating students should be sufficiently prepared to take the STAMP test. Taking the STAMP test puts students on the path to earning the Seal of Biliteracy. More information on the STAMP test is available on this website. This puts students on the path to Advanced Placement (AP) Spanish in high school at an earlier grade level. The course objective is to align with student’s college & career goals.

Student Eligibility/ Prerequisites:

  • Daily attendance above 90%
  • Grades are all As & Bs
  • Student completes all class & homework

Student Required Factors for Success in Course:

  1. Academic Performance:
  • Maintain daily attendance above 90%
  • Maintain Bs or Better in all courses
  • Complete all classwork & homework
  1. Attitude, Motivation & Disposition:
  • Attendance above 90% Elementary
  • Demonstrates: Self management, motivation & perseverance

  • Parents/guardians will ensure that the after school hub is prioritized over other after school opportunities
  • School has identified an onsite mentor to discuss performance in course and advocate for the needs of the student

Parental Expectations:

Commit to students staying after school two days a week for the duration of the program.

Course Structure:

The course will be offered virtually & outside of the school day. Students will participate in the class at school while supported by a school-based staff member. Students also have the option of logging into the class from home.

Home School Support Expectations:

The school principal will aid with the rostering of students and will facilitate communicating with parents when necessary. The principal will be responsible for hiring and supervising the staff member(s) who oversee the students. The principal will provide time & space for any required testing. In addition, the principal will:

  • Provide devices for students to access coursework
  • Designate a staff member to supervise students as they log in to the Spanish class.
  • Provide a quiet, monitored space on campus location for participation
  • Designate a Spanish World Language Hubs point of contact who will:
  • Communicate with students and families about absences and participation
  • Troubleshoot tech issues
  • Communicate with Spanish teacher around attendance after they contact parents of absent students

Home School Requirements:

  • Identify staff member to act as a mentor for attendance/grades  
  • Ensure supervision during course time
  • Provide time & space for any required testing
  • Provide devices for students to access coursework.
  • If students are to log in from school, designate a staff member to supervise students as they log into Spanish class.
  • Provide accurate rosters. The Virtual Academy will manage creating the course and rostering students in Spanish
  • Designate an Spanish Hubs point of contact:
  • Communicate with students and families about absences and participation.
  • Communicate school deadlines for grades, etc. with the hub teacher.

Exit Criteria:

  • Student attendance will be monitored via Aspen. School leaders will be sent a biweekly attendance and grade report. Schools will work with the Virtual Academy to ensure teacher rosters are updated as necessary:
  • Students who have five consecutive unexcused absences will be removed from the program.
  • Hub Coordinators and school leaders will communicate with home school & parents prior to exiting students
  • Hubs locations & instructors will be adjusted at the Quarter mark based upon ongoing enrollment & attendance of students
  • Students must follow appropriate behavior guidelines

Course Objective:

Taking algebra in 8th grade gives students a foundation for high school mathematics. Taking algebra also helps students to be on the course sequence that will allow them to reach advanced coursework such as AP Calculus in their senior year.

Student Eligibility/ Prerequisites:

Schools will select students that they feel are ready for algebra based on guidance provided by the Math Department.

HS Geometry for Middle Grades

Dates:

Course Objective:

In Geometry, students will reason inductively to construct geometric patterns, discover geometric relationships and formulate conjectures. Students will reason deductively to construct logical arguments and proofs using appropriate terminology. All students should regularly be engaged in the Standards for Mathematical Practice as defined by the Common Core. Mathematical content should be addressed through the study of big ideas allowing students to see the connections between multiple concepts. The mathematical content of Geometry includes Similarity and Congruence, Transformational Geometry, Right Triangles, Geometric Constructions and Proofs, Measurement and Dimension, Modeling, Coordinate Geometry, and Circles.

Student Eligibility/ Prerequisites:

To take middle grades geometry, students must have already passed the CPS Algebra Exit Exam and a yearlong algebra course with a C average or higher.

AP Spanish Language

  • Heritage Learners of Spanish with strong academic skills in all Spanish language domains.
  • The AP Spanish course is conducted in Spanish.
  • Heritage Spanish speakers need to be at a Spanish language proficiency level that allows them to understand instruction
  • Must complete the Advanced Placement Spanish Proficiency Assessment  
  • (or) Students who successfully completed Spanish III (As or Bs)
  • (or) Students in schools which do not offer Spanish III, who were highly successful in Spanish II (As) with teacher’s recommendation

Course Objective:

These courses allow qualified students who do not currently have these course opportunities at their home schools the chance to earn college credit while still in high school.

Student Eligibility/ Prerequisites:

All students must have a 2.5 GPA and 90% attendance.  Students looking to participate in English 101 or Math courses will need to meet the college readiness requirements established by CCC. Students must be in 11th or 12th grade. Find details on the CCC website.

Student Required Factors for Success in Course:

  • School has identified an onsite mentor to discuss performance in course and advocate for needs of student

Exit Criteria:

  • Students' attendance will be monitored. Attendance below 80% will be exited from the program.
  • Hub Coordinators will communicate with home school & parents prior to exiting students.
  • Students whose grades are averaging below a C will be exited after 2 quarters (consecutive or nonconsecutive).
  • Hubs locations & instructors will be adjusted at the Quarter mark based upon ongoing enrollment of students.

Home School Support Expectations:

Home school should help identify students who would benefit from this opportunity.  Counselors should assist students in completing the CCC applications. The home school will:

  • Identify staff member to act as a mentor for attendance/grades  
  • Ensure supervision during course time
  • Provide a device for student participation
  • Ensure supervision during course time
  • Provide time & space for any required testing
