To apply to college in Ontario you must have

  • Grade 12 English - C or U stream
  • Graduated!  Ensure you have met ALL requirements:  30 credits, 40 community service hours & literacy requirement
  • Any other prerequisite courses

NOTE:

  • Many programs only require ENG4C/ENG4U to determine acceptance
  • College and/or university credits can be used to apply
  • Apprenticeship, Certificate, Diploma and Degree Programs offered
  • Average is based on prerequisite courses only

  • Apply in the spring once you have accepted an offer to a college or university

  • Program requirements:  Prerequisites; cut-off

averages; other criteria, e.g. audition, portfolio

  • Location:  Home or away; size and location of

  • Do they offer Co-op or internship opportunities?
  • Campus Factors: Size; atmosphere on campus;

scholarships; program cost

  • Extra-curricular activities: clubs, sports, etc.
  • Start date: some programs have start dates

  • Get paid while you train; hourly wage increases each year in training
  • Must have an employer who is willing to take you on as an apprentice or attend a college program that may lead to an apprenticeship

OTHER PROGRAMS FOR EARNING CREDITS (For Senior Students)

DUAL CREDIT PROGRAM

The Dual Credit Program allows secondary students the opportunity to receive both secondary and college credits at the same time. The program has many benefits: sample college culture, experience college course expectations, tuition free college course with textbooks and transportation provided for college attendance.

Courses offered include: Masonry, Culinary Skills, Baking, Electrical, HVAC, Plumbing, Welding, Carpentry, American Sign Language, Criminal Justice, Early Childhood Education, PSW, Manicure Skills, Security Guard Training, Cabinet Making and Photography.

  • Students attend courses at Conestoga College, at the Waterloo, Doon or Guelph Campuses.
  • Students attend their Dual Credit course one day a week - you will have to make up any course work you miss at Eastwood.
  • Students are supported by both their College professor and a Dual Credit high school teacher

The Dual Credit Program is not an entitlement. Students must apply and be accepted into the program!

You MUST meet with your Guidance counselor to apply to this program.

APPRENTICESHIP COOP PROGRAMS

SKILLED TRADE APPRENTICESHIPS

MILITARY COOP

During Semester 2 of your graduating year of high school, you have the option to apply to a number of Skilled Trade COOP Apprenticeship programs run by local Trade Unions.

There are opportunities for:

  • Electrical Apprenticeship
  • Plumbing Apprenticeship
  • General Carpenter Apprenticeship
  • Drywall, Acoustic and Lathing Applicator
  • Construction Craft Worker

Acceptance to these programs is based on:

  • high grades in Gr 12 English and Gr 12 math
  • an interview
  • good mechanical aptitude
  • good attendance

The Trade Unions only accept a limited number of students each year - you are NOT guaranteed a position!

However, those students offered a Coop position will recieve:

  • Job Site Preparation training, including WHMIS, First Aid, Working at Heights, etc
  • On Site training
  • A possibility of being offered a paid position after the school year ends

The Canadian Army Reserve provides students with a COOP opportunity to get on-the-job experience in the Armed Forces.

The Canadian Army Reserve COOP Program includes:

Basic Military Qualifications, first-aid, navigation, field craft, career awareness, communication,self defense, and training as a Gunner (Guelph), Combat Engineer (Waterloo), Infanteer (Kitchener/Cambridge), Financial Services Administrator (all

locations), or Human Resources Administrator (all locations).

Interested students should

  • be 16 years old or older, have completed 16 credits and be a Canadian citizen or Permanent Resident
  • be able to pass the fitness test
  • talk to their COOP teacher and let them know they want to join the Military COOP
  • check with their Guidance counselor that they have Coop in the afternoon of Semester 2
  • fill in the consent form
