The Brassavola parentage of Maikai figures prominently in the style of flowers. These should produce star shaped type anceps. Helen is an excellent anceps parent and has produced many fine hybrids. These are expected to be a blush pink with nice yellow centers.

These plants will grow to be 18” to 24” tall and will have higher flower counts to bloom in the summer. This chocolate drop hybrid will produce heads of dark, waxy red to purple flowers. Mr. Bojangles is half C. schilleriana, with the other half as C. aclandiae and C. guttata. The schilleriana parent will impart a more compact plant form. Anceps with part L. splendida and part L. undulata. Splendid Spire has produced larger excellent quality Schomburgkia type flowers in beautiful shades of rose with yellow centers. Paired with a dark waxy purple Maunalani parent, these will have grape wax purple flowers with some lips inset with yellow. Spring and summer blooming.

L. Splendid Spire “Rose Dust” x Blc. Chocoberry Fondue “Ruby Red”.
These are mid-sized, showy bifoliates. Sturdy flower stems hold flowers just above the leaves. These will form flower heads of 5 to 7 medium sized, well-shaped flowers. Colors are a rich satin purple with reddish or darker purple lips and a yellow raised callous and lip shape which is reminiscent of its anceps heritage. The fuller shaped flowers are due to the Chocoberry parent. I expect these to be very productive bloomers 2x a year and outside patio hardy in our climate. Both parents are very floriferous in the spring and late fall. At maturity these will put up a magnificent showing. Progeny are sweetly fragrant and smell like sweet roses!

I made another cross of this type to test the uniformity of bregerii and anceps and lo and behold they have been very similar to an earlier cross–see #11. These will be elegant anceps type flowers with flares. The first to bloom have been a glowing pink color with star-shaped flowers. Petals exhibit the Guerrero flare! These are made to have shorter flowering stems. These are very uniform looking plants and very compact due to the dominance of L. bregerii. The lip is dark purple inset with yellow.

This is a “self” of a selected plant from this outstanding batch of originals that flowered with blushed blue petals and sepals offset by a deep blue lip. As with most sibling hybrids there will be variation on a theme. All will produce cerulean heads of flowers in the summer. Plants are bifoliate and growing vigorously. They are a year or two from blooming.
