WHAT IS POLITICAL ART?

POLITICS: Having to do with group decision making and power dynamics between groups of people.

THREE CATEGORIES OF POLITICAL ART:

PORTRAYAL: describes events or situations that people find themselves in as a result of political or social structures. Because it is representational, it can be understood from multiple political perspectives. Art styles: Realism, Social Realism, Naturalism.

PROMOTION: identifies a problem from a specific perspective and depicts or suggests solutions. Harder to manipulate from an opposing point of view. Art styles: Socialist Realism, Social Realism, Campaign Art

PROJECTION: suggests ideas that are outside the usual ways of thinking and can be obviously or subtly political. Art styles: Surrealism, Utopian or Visionary Images
