Privacy Policy

Last Updated: September 18th, 2025

We understand that Rail is a platform where people will be sharing their political views. We know that in the current climate, it's hard to trust one another, let alone a platform, to be transparent and honest. We strive to do that with Rail by ensuring our Privacy Policy is as simple and easy to understand as possible. That being said, we must meet our legal obligations by describing our policies in as much detail as we can.

So to highlight our stance, understand this about Rail:

Controlling Interest

Political Influence

Your Privacy

Rail is made by two guys in Raleigh, NC. We are not controlled by any large corporation or any special interest investors. We strive to make Rail a platform that is free from outside influence and want to let the community decide where it goes.

We don't care about political parties or agendas. Rail is maintained by a strict and clear set of community guidelines and the good spirit of the community. We do not and will not take actions on behalf of political parties, policy makers, donors or anyone else.

We are just as spooked as most people by applications that ask for invasive permissions or do questionable things with our data. With Rail, we strive to be very clear and deliberate about what we ask of you and what we are doing with it.

1. Information We Collect

To use Rail you need to have an account, and to create an account, we need to obtain some information about you:

Most of this we will request from you when you log in with a third-party provider such as Apple or Google. We will request your Voting Area shortly after. Your Voting Area is likely either a US state or territory. We do not ask for your address or geolocation data at this time.

2. How We Use Information

Our legal basis for processing your information includes your consent, fulfillment of a service contract, legal compliance, and our legitimate interest in maintaining platform integrity.

2.1 Safety & Security

We use information we collect to provide for the safety and security of our users, our products, services, and your account. This includes verifying your identity, authenticating your account, and defending against fraud, unauthorized use, and illegal activity. We also use the information to evaluate and affect the safety and quality of content on Rail - this includes investigating and enforcing our policies and terms, as well as applicable law.

2.2 Service & Analysis

We use the information we collect to measure and analyze the effectiveness of our products and services and to better understand how you use them in order to make them better.

2.3 Research

We use information you share with us, or that we collect to conduct research, surveys, product testing, and troubleshooting to help us operate and improve our products and services.

2.4 Cookies & Local Storage

Rail does not use third-party tracking cookies. We may store session or preference data locally to improve performance and user experience.

3.5 Petitioning

Our proposals are drafted like formal legislative bills, following the same structure as a proposed law. They can be refined and voted on by the community. With enough support, a proposal may be submitted to elected officials as a community petition.

If you choose to add a signature to your Rail profile, it may be included in petitions submitted to public officials when you vote in favor of a proposal. We do not share any other identifiable user data with government representatives. This data is only shared to show how the community has backed a Proposal and is framed in a way similar to any other petition.

You may remove your signature at any time via your account settings, and your name will no longer appear in future petitions.
