DIRECT ACTION PROTEST TONIGHT 8:00PM, IN SOLIDARITY WITH NATIONWIDE PROTESTS AGAINST POLICE BRUTALITY

[Lexington, Kentucky, May 29, 2020]—On March 13, 2020, Louisville Metro Police Department shot and killed Breonna Taylor. On May 25, 2020, Minneapolis police killed George Floyd. In solidarity with protests occurring in Louisville, Minneapolis, and other cities across the country, Lori Martinez, Stephen Roberts, Xavier Wharton, and Gabrielle Williams are joining together with community members in a Standing in Solidarity Against Police Brutality Protest, tonight, May 29, 2020, 8pm, on the courthouse lawn. We are asking folks to wear black and a mask.

Demands include submitted changes to the police contract currently in negotiation for greater police accountability. Currently, if an officer is accused of misconduct, the city pays for legal representation. This is a gap in accountability that must be closed. Also, current police discipline allows for little to no community or elected official oversight. This must change as well. In addition, all delays currently allowed in investigation of officer misconduct must end. Police chaplain Donovan Stewart has still not received any disciplinary action for repeatedly closed fist punching an austic teenager in the head in February of 2019. This is not justice, it is an injustice.

We are calling on community to join us in a socially distant, non-violent protest this evening, supporting an end to police brutality through these local demands.

The following document provides a detailed explanation of all changes that need to be made in the current police contract for greater #LPDAccountability. https://docs.google.com/document/d/14HfByWiJj1T6N8cdmqp-ajgmc14rlovYZGvaPkpUxyc/edit
