WSU's 143rd Commencement, Friday, April 25, 2014.
April 25, 2014
Welcome to our Newest Major: Carmen Longo - Geol. We are excited to have you join our department! Please do not hesitate to let us know how we can best support you with your goals. (Geol = Geology major, AEG = Applied Environmental Geosciences major, EST = Earth Science Teaching major)
Last Newsletter of the Academic Year: Today's newsletter is the last for the 2013-2104 academic year. We hope you have enjoyed them; please let us know if you have any suggestions for future issues. We will continue to update the department website with any internship, job, and/or research opportunities that come to our attention over the summer. Look for our next newsletter in August, to coincide with the start of Fall Semester 2014.
Geology Field Camp Begins Monday: The department will have 11 geology majors participating in summer field camp this summer (GEO 4510), the largest class is quite some time. We offer our field camp course every 2 years and run the camp in cooperation with the Department of Geology at Utah State University. This year's students should meet Dr. Yonkee at 9 am on Monday, April 28, in SL 320, and be prepared for a Brunton compass review. We wish everyone involved in this year's camp safe travels and a rewarding educational experience.
Field camp Students to Attend GSA Meeting: As part of this year's field camp, students and faculty will travel to Bozeman, MT, to participate in this year's Rocky Mountain Section meeting of the Geological Society of America (May 19-21). Geology major Kari Godfrey will present a poster based her stratigraphic research in the Henry Mountains and Kaiparowits basins; Dr. Adolph Yonkee, and colleagues, will present a refined model of the tectonic evolution of the Sevier and Laramide orogenic belts.
Congratulations to This Year's Graduates! The Department graduated 10 students this year, counting the students who will graduate after field camp. They all worked very hard to earn their degrees and we look forward to hearing from them as their careers develop. Please promise to keep in touch with your alma mater:
Chelsey Combe (AEG), Shalane Crosland (Geology), Chase Dickinson (Geology), Kari Godfrey (Geology), Rhett Howell (Geology), Matt Laird (AEG), Josh Poulsen (AEG). Chad Price (Geology), Joe Schlichter (AEG), and Julie Taylor (Geology).
Geoscience Students, Alum & Professor to Lead Several Sciences Hikes:
Weber Pathways is a non-profit organization in Weber County, Utah, dedicated to trails and pathways for walkers, runners, hikers, cyclists, horseback riders, cross-country skiers, snowshoers, and other non-motorized trail users. This summer season, there will again be several of our own geoscience students and alum organizing and running a few hikes. The schedule for the summer hikes will come out in this May and can be found at www.weberpathways.org and www.webercsme.org. Please feel welcome to email firstname.lastname@example.org or email@example.com with your questions and/or to get involved.
Departmental Advising: If you didn't come in for advising during this last semester, and/or you have some questions regarding your plan for fall classes, you can still touch base with your departmental advisor via email over the summer. The advisors are listed below:
Geology: Dr. Jeff Eaton
Applied Environmental Geosciences: Dr. Marek Matyjasik
