Which objects in the classroom are solids, liquid, or gas?

  1. The teacher will read aloud the poem “Splish, Splash Rain.”
  2. Have the children recall what happened to water when placed in a square container then placed in a circular container?
  3. Have a volunteer answer: What happened to the water when the author jumped in the puddle? Why?

Observe and communicate some of the properties of each state of matter.

Does water, air, and gas take up space? 

  1. Have the children investigate how water changes shape by pouring water in different shape containers.
  2. Have the children share what they already know about air.
  3. The teacher will hold an empty bottle and ask: What is inside the bottle?
  4. The teacher will push the bottle into the water, open mouth down, and then submerge it slowly while keeping the mouth under the water. Tilt bottle slightly. Point out the bubbles that float up as the bottle fills with water.
  5. Ask: What do you see? What can you tell about what is happening? Does water and air taske up space?
  6. The teacher will explain these bubbles are the air that is inside the bottle. Have the children talk about what they see.
  7. Have the children explore solids.
  8. Have the children hold a lump of clay in their hands and talk about how it feels. Ask: Is the clay solid, liquid, or gas? Why do you think so? Does water, air, and gas take up space?
  9. Have the children make up a sculpture using a small lump of clay.
