Kurhaus Abbazia v. Szeghő^[1]

Abbazia, 31st March 1934

Dear Friend,

On the assumption that you have now returned from an enjoyable trip, I wanted to let you know that your letter arrived just before I set off to come here. I took the enclosed 500 fr. cheque straight round to the College [of Fine Arts], but not finding either the Rector or the secretary in their offices, I gave it to the president of the youth association along with the message that it had been sent by you for their student canteen. I could see that they were delighted with your generous donation. I’m assuming they have written to thank you by now.

Last autumn I managed to secure for our Museum that attic that faces the City Park lake. We put together the designs straight away and in January began work on partitioning it into three top-lit rooms. The walls are just drying now and once they have been painted I will place in them the fruits of what I have been putting together during my free time during the course of my whole life, with great interest and enjoyment: the entire course of oil painting

(from Van Eyck to Velazquez and Frans Hals) in 100 carefully assembled copies. If no unforeseen hitch occurs, we will open the collection to the public in the first half of May. I think it will be an excellent complement to our collection, which is somewhat lacking in works by first-rate masters.

Nowadays, when young people cannot really travel, and will not be able to travel for some time, this collection will be doubly valuable. Over the past few years the number of portrait commissions has been going down from year to year, so this project has been happily occupying the final phase of my life. How lucky it is that I started putting money aside for these three rooms for some years now, so I didn’t need to find it all at once. It all came from the income of my foundation.

We are greatly enjoying our three weeks here: sunbathing, strolling by the sea – making the most of things, in other words, and thanking the Almighty for this chance to enjoy ourselves free of all care, in spite of the particularly difficult state of affairs in Budapest.

Sadly this idyll will come to an end soon, because by the 7th of April we will be back home again.

You know that we put on a rather good Lotz^[2] exhibition at the Műcsarnok last autumn. Now we have filled the first two rooms with works by Ebner.^[3] The best Ebner picture belonged to Baron Kohner. I am glad that I managed to acquire it for our gallery at the Kohner auction.^[4]

The Society of Portrait Painters was also given a side room in the current exhibition. We were barely able to fill it, though: these days people are commissioning very little, and when they do, it is mainly small paintings. It is a mystery to me what most of our artists live off!

The so-called National Exhibition, the big show organised by the Culture Minister (a compendium of Hungarian artists) will take place in May and June. The deadline for submissions is the 12th of April. I am telling you this in case you happen to have a painting here which is at your disposal, because if you would like to send it in, I will gladly assist you.

Kedves Barátom!

Azon feltevésen, hogy szép utadról már haza érkeztél akarom tudomásodra juttatni, hogy közvetlenül ide való elutazásom előtt kaptam meg a leveledet. Az abban foglalt 500 fr-ról szóló csekket mindjárt elvittem a főiskolába, de sem a Rektort, sem a főtitkárt nem találván a hivatalában az ifjúsági elnöknek adtam át azon üzenettel, hogy ezt az összeget Te küldted menzájuk javára. Láttam, hogy nagy örömmel fogadták generózus adományodat. Feltételezem, hogy eddig meg is köszönték már.

Múlt ősszel sikerült Muzeumunk azon padlását megkapnom, mely a városligeti tó felé fekszik. Mindjárt meg is terveztük és januártól kezdve meg is építettük azt a három nagy felülvilágított termet, melyben a falak jelenleg folyó megszáradása és azután kifestése után el fogom helyezni egész életem szabad idejében annyi jó kedvvel, érdeklődéssel folytatott tevékenységem gyümölcsét: az olajfestés egész fejlődését

(Van Eycktól Velazquez és Frans Halsig) gondos 100 másolatban. Ha nem jön előre nem látott akadály közbe, úgy még május első felében átadjuk a gyűjteményt a nyilvánosságnak. Azt hiszem, hogy jól fogja kiegészíteni gyűjteményünket, mely éppen elsőrendű mesterek műveiben eléggé hiányos.

A mai időkben, mikor a fiatalok nemigen utazhatnak és még sokáig nem fognak utazhatni, kétszeresen becses lesz ez a gyűjtemény. Az utolsó nehány évben évről évre csökkent az arczképmegbízások száma, úgyhogy ezen tevékenységem kellemesen tölti ki életem utolsó korszakát. Milyen jó volt, hogy e három terem költségét már nehány év óta félretettem, úgyhogy nem kellett egyszerre előteremteni. Alapítványom jövedelméből tellett.

Nagyon élvezzük itteni tartózkodásunk e három hetét: sütkérezünk a napon, sétálunk a tengerparton, egyszóval: lopjuk a napot, hálát adva a Mindenhatónak, hogy a rendkívül rossz pesti állapotok daczára gondtalanul élhetjük napjainkat.

Sajnos nemsokára vége is lesz ezen paradicsomi állapotnak, mert Apr 7ikén ismét odahaza leszünk.

Azt tudod, hogy múlt ősszel igen szép Lotz kiállítást rendeztünk a Műcsarnokban, most meg Ebner műveivel töltöttük meg a két első termet. A báró Kohner birtokában volt a legszebb Ebner kép. Örülök, hogy a Kohneraukción nekem sikerült azt képtárunk számára megszerezni.

A jelenlegi kiállításon az Arczképfestők Társasága is kapott egy oldaltermet. Azt is alig tudtuk megtölteni; most kevés és többnyire kis képet rendelnek meg a festőknél. Rejtély előttem: miből él művészeink legnagyobb része!

A nagy, a Kultuszminiszter által rendezett úgynevezett Nemzeti kiállítás (a magy. művészek összesége) Május és Júniusban lesz. Beadási határidő Apr 12ike. Ezt azért írom ha esetleg volna itt nálunk egy képed, mely fölött diszponálhatsz és ha kedved volna azt beküldeni, szívesen állok segítségedre.

Ede Balló (1859–1936), Hungarian artist. Trained at the Mintarajziskola under Bertalan Székely, at the Vienna Academy in 1881 and at the Munich Academy from 1882 to 1885. Worked in Madrid and Rome. Best known as a copyist of Velázquez and the Dutch masters. He was a professor at the Budapest Academy of Fine Arts from 1894 to 1923.
