Plan Introduction

Written in conjunction of state requirements and the requirements set with the federal E-Rate program, this plan provides a snapshot of the current conditions of the district and the intended direction of improvement of technology and technology integration.

This document provides the needs assessment, current conditions, identified needs, and goals set with strategies for meeting said goals and evaluation methods used.

Executive Summary

In support of the Buna Independent School District, the district will ensure that students, teachers and staff have access to and an understanding of, technology-based tools, enabling them to gather, manage, analyze, evaluate, produce, and present information. Instructional staff members will model the integration of technology into all curricular areas. Departments will model the efficient use of technology tools to improve district operations. Technology will be seamlessly integrated with curriculum to ensure student acquisition of skills for researching, managing and presenting information.

The district will provide organizational support for all aspects of technology integration. The district will maintain and enhance a district-wide information sharing system that provides easy access to accurate, current information within the district, community and beyond. Hardware and software that allows students to be constructors of knowledge, enriches the curriculum, and ensures comparable access district-wide will be provided. Sufficient technology support, both technical and instructional, will be available to all campuses to ensure effective use of the system and accompanying technology tools.

Staff development is a key element in ensuring the effective use of technology in instruction and operations. Buna ISD will continue to broaden the scope of the district-wide technology training program, enabling staff to effectively utilize technology tools in all areas to enhance learning. All categories of employees will be expected to participate in technology staff development for enhanced skill development. Assistance will be provided for instructional staff in the development of curriculum projects and model teaching using technology. Technology training will focus on best practices in the effective integration of educational technologies into the curriculum.

The district will continue to evaluate the comprehensive support system to meet the needs of students and staff. This annual review will include hardware/software support and staff development. Program assessments will be conducted annually.

Needs Assessment

Assessments utilizing teacher/student surveys; interviews; subject, team, and committee meetings; inventories; and the Texas Campus and Teacher STaR Charts were conducted to determine the current status of technology in our district, as well as the future needs of our district.

Current Conditions

District Level

Each campus is connected to the districts GigaMAN leased lines and receives internet connectivity through Region 5 ESC
Each campus is connected through fiber connectivity. Elementary is connected through single mode fiber. Network infracture is aging and needs replacing in many areas.
All Campuses are connected to the LAN via wireless technology.
High School and Elementary make use of Aruba Networks Wireless infrastructure with 802.11N and WPA2 security.
Junior High School makes use of a HP wireless infrastructure using 802.11ABG with open connectivity.
Three SSIDs are presented to provide connectivity and security for both district owned equipment and personally owned equipment.

Network printing is available to all staff
District makes use of SolarWinds DameWare for remote support.
District and campus websites are hosted off site

District makes use of Eduphoria for inventory, events, helpdesk, PDAS, Aware, and online forms.
Staff email is hosted off site and is provided by Google Apps for Education. The district will make use of free services provided by Google Apps for Education.
Student email is hosted off site and is provided by Google Apps for Education. Student email is filtered and locked to interdomain traffic.
Each campus has desktop video conferencing capabilities.
Antivirus (avast!) and internet filtering (NetSpective) are established.

High School Campus

Identified Needs

Network infrastructure, including switches, wireless access points, wireless controller, and uninterruptible power supplies, for the new high school need to be budgeted for. The current network equipment at the current high school is old and will not sufficiently handle the needs for the new school.
Administration and Faculty support in technology initiatives.
Vertical alignment is being implemented to assure that all students will be taught technology TEKS beginning in Kindergarten and hierarchically advancing in skills, productivity, and problem-solving through graduation; however, we need to have teachers put this into action and administrators promoting this for it to work.
Improvement of technology integration and teaching techniques.
We need continuous staff development, locally and off-site.
Professional development on usage of collaboration tools.
Professional development on usage of student email for collaboration and communication.
Professional development has been given and made available in the area of integrating technology into the curriculum; however, it needs to be implemented and assessed across both grade levels and curriculum. We need to evaluate teacher proficiencies in all areas utilizing products, teacher portfolios, checksheets, and class visits by administrators.
Teachers, administrators, and librarians need to continue to work toward meeting SBEC standards for teachers, with proficiency assessments to assure this; a timeline is needed to determine when various proficiencies should be completed. We need to do an assessment to determine this timeline.
We need more personnel with advanced technical application and integration skills to assist our teachers and students.
Additional student workstations in class to properly facilitate integrated technology learning.
More and updated software and equipment is needed, district-wide, as well as for our advanced technology classes at the high school.
Need additional mobile labs at junior high school to facilitate online spanish instruction. Chromebooks or traditional laptops would be ideal.
Insufficient number of workstations to handle the possibility of state required on-line testing in the future.
Student and educator's workstations need to be updated or replaced on a continuous basis.
Replacement equipment and parts should be, ideally, kept on hand to cut down on loss of usage by teachers and students.
Our infrastructure needs upgrading to better support higher device counts.
Switching infrastructure is aging and needs to be replaced in order to handle higher capacities.
We have insufficient electrical wiring in most classrooms; therefore, they could not adequately handle more student machines.
Single mode fiber exist between the high school and elementary. More single mode fiber needs to be run to increase the capacity of cross campus traffic, including wireless.
A large robust wireless network has been deployed at the high school and elementary school, but not at the junior high. Advanced features and coverage is needed at the junior high.
Internet filtering is operational, but lacks many features that would be needed with the increase of student owned devices. Evaluation of and funding is needed for newer appliances.
As more devices come into our network bandwidth will need to be increased.
Updated software needs to be purchased due to support being discontinued.
Security camera system is aging and needs replacing. Current video is low resolution and makes it impossible to identify persons of interest.
A properly trained grant writer would be an excellent addition for our district.
We need new student desks in the library to facilitate the lab equipment.
We need to continue improving the student to computer ratio district wide.
It has been beneficial to work with other districts of similar size and implementing similar programs. this needs to continue.

Evaluation Method

Evaluation data will be collected through survey implementation, campus and district reports, Campus and District Improvement Plans, and performance assessments. All of this data will be compared to previously collected data and Campus and Teacher STaR Charts, as well as goals and objectives to determine the level of implementation and effectiveness. Our STaR Chart results each year for each campus will be used to help Buna ISD assess its progress toward meeting the goals of the Long Range Plan for Technology. The evaluation data will be compiled and analyzed to update Campus and District Improvement Plans and The Technology Plan semi-annually. This will insure that technology improvement and training is ongoing and valid.

For students, we are aligning technology integration with TEKS. Skills and grade reports will assist in determining the effectiveness of this integration as it is put into use. Reports from the Elementary Learining.com lab, Junior High lab, Elementary and Junior High Easy Tech, are being utilized now to gauge student skills at those levels. We plan for each student to create and maintain an electronic portfolio to document their skills, projects, and best productions. We have adopted Learning.com for K-8 to teach Technology TEKS and assess student progress/proficiency.

For teachers, we are also developing criteria whereby teachers will keep a professional productivity portfolio containing:

Certifications for workshops and training
Teacher Self-report including samples of products and lessons they have developed, samples of student work done in their classroom, etc.

All of this information, lesson plans, projects, etc. will also be maintained on our servers so it is available to all teachers. We will use these, surveys and Proficiency Skills Assessments to help evaluate our needs for Professional Development and to assess our teachers’ ability to integrate technology into curricula and instruction.

Our Technology Director will coordinate with consultants, vendors, and the Technology Committee to acquire and install required/desired hardware, software, and other innovative technologies to insure compatibility, uniformity, and usability.

Other methods used for evaluation will include:

Surveys of the staff conducted yearly in regard to their use of technology in the classroom and their technology needs
Informal interviews conducted twice, once a semester, by the campus Technology Plan Committee representatives
Records of staff member participation in technology training monitored by sign-in sheets and teacher professional development records
Integration of training into the classroom as measured by teacher anecdotal records, products, portfolios, surveys, etc.
Monitoring and documentation of community access to technology resources and information on the campuses and on the district web site
Monitoring and documentation of community involvement
At least, yearly inventory of hardware and software. Eduphoria will be used to enable this.
