Superfund Sites Research and Letter to Congress

Objective:  By the end of this assignment, you have written a persuasive letter to the Massachusetts Congress members explaining why funding the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) is critical in terms of Super Fund cleanup and access for all peoples to clean drinking water.

Background:    “A Superfund site is any land in the United States that has been contaminated by hazardous waste and identified by the EPA as a candidate for cleanup because it poses a risk to human health and/or the environment. These sites are placed on the National Priorities List (NPL).”  What are the Superfund site "NPL" statuses? - TOXMAP FAQ. (n.d.). Retrieved March 20, 2017, from https://toxmap.nlm.nih.gov/toxmap/faq/2009/08/what-are-the-superfund-site-npl-statuses.html

EPA’s Superfund program is responsible for cleaning up some of the nation’s most contaminated land and responding to environmental emergencies, oil spills and natural disasters. To protect public health and the environment, the Superfund program focuses on making a visible and lasting difference in communities, ensuring that people can live and work in healthy, vibrant places.” Superfund. (2017, March 01). Retrieved March 20, 2017, from https://www.epa.gov/superfund

According to the EPA’s website, there are 40 sites in Massachusetts alone that are “proposed, final and deleted NPL sites and non-NPL Superfund Alternative Approach (SAA) sites.”  Search for Superfund Sites Where You Live. (2016, December 20). Retrieved March 20, 2017, from https://www.epa.gov/superfund/search-superfund-sites-where-you-live

For this project, we will focus in on three sites:

General Electric in Pittsfield, MA; Olin Chemical in Wilmington, MA; Industri-Plex in Woburn, MA

Directions:  Research the following questions, documenting the sources you use (in appropriate format).  You will then write a letter to the Massachusetts Congress members explaining why EPA funding of Superfund sites is critical and important for the access to clean, safe drinking water.
