APIAL Cross Country Rules / Guidelines.
- DIVISIONS
- Mid-school-There shall be three divisions for boys and three for girls. C-team, JV, & Varsity
- Elementary- There shall be two co-ed divisions for elementary.
- 1st-2nd grade age group
- 3rd-4th grade age group.
- Results are not gender based
- DISTANCE
- Girls, Boys Varsity . The distance for the cross country event will be approximately two miles.
- Girls, Boys JV. The distance for the cross country event will be approximately 1.5 miles.
- Girls, Boys C-team. The distance for the cross country event will be approximately 1.5 miles.
- Elementary. The distance for the cross country event will be approximately 1.0 miles
- ENTRIES
- Team Size
- There is no limit to entries. Elementary cross country teams/athletes do not place for their school. The purpose is to gain understanding of the sport and experience participating in cross country.
- Mid-School
- Number. A minimum of three participants shall constitute a team. If a school enters fewer than 3 students, it cannot compete for the team title.
- 3 participants per division (C-team Boys, C-team Girls, JV Boys, JV Girls, & Varsity Girls, Varsity Boys) not 3 per school.
- Team Score. The place of the first 3 finishers on each team will count for the total team score. All other runners serve as displacement.
- Team Limit. A school may enter only one team of boys and one team of girls in each division.
- MEET/LEAGUE LIMITATIONS (applies to mid-school participation only)
- Number of Meets. Each student must compete in 1 meet throughout the APIAL Cross Country Season in order to compete in the APIAL FINAL MEET.
- Grade Level Division Placement
- C-team: 5th or 6th only allowed to run C-team
- JV: Grades 5-6 may run up in JV Division. 7th must run in JV Division,
- Varsity: Grades 5,6,7 may run up in Varsity Division. 8th Grade must run in Varsity Division.
- If a student runs up at any level at any point in the season they are allowed to run back down at the following meet. The only exception is for the finals declaration, which is one meet before the APIAL Finals. A runner must run at the same level for the declaration meet in the Finals.
- A student may not compete for Varsity Championship without competing in at least 1 Varsity meet during the APIAL season.
- CHAMPIONSHIP STRUCTURE (applies to mid-school participation only)
- Rosters - Team Rosters for Varsity Cross Country must be submitted before the APIAL Championships at least 48 hours in advance.
- Declaration for finals will be run 1 meet prior to APIAL Championships.
- COURSE DESIGN/ROUTE
- Hosting Sites have full discretion on course design. Course does not have to measure exactly 2.0 miles for varsity, 1.5 for JV & C-team, or 1.0 miles for elementary. Approximate distance will be used.
