Lydia Sherrer, known for her captivating world building, relatable but quirky characters, and snarky wit, is proud to announce the August 2017 release of “Accidental Witch,” the first in dark fantasy coming of age story. Set in the world of “Love, Lies, and Hocus Pocus: The Lily Singer Adventures,” this series explores the backstory of its most enigmatic character: Sebastian Blackwell. We find out that at just sixteen, he’s involved in a car crash that kills both his parents. With a ghost his only friend, a goth girl his only ally, and a demon prince his only chance, Sebastian sets out on a desperate path of redemption that, knowing his luck, is just as likely to damn him as save him. But as long as he gets his parents back, he doesn’t care.

Lydia Sherrer, a native of the rolling, horse-country hills of Kentucky, often got in trouble as a youth for reading instead doing “more important” tasks like eating, sleeping, and schoolwork. She has not reformed her behavior, but at least now can make a living creating more stories for people of all ages to get in trouble over. Her books have been known to cause: loud snorts of laughter, inexplicable craving for tea, and loss of work productivity. Written in the same vein as thrilling paranormal adventures like Supernatural and Odd Thomas, this is one series you won’t want to miss. Here are what some of her fans are saying.

“This book was so good that I almost missed a meeting because I was enthralled with the story.” - Kristi

"This book is fantastic! I got sucked in and couldn't stop reading it...After I read the first one I immediately purchased the second.” - Laura

"I literally couldn't put this book down. I was up until 4 a.m. finishing it, because I had to find out what happened next.” - Andrea

"These aren't your normal wizards. There are no cardboard cutout characters in this book, but well developed and likable characters that will keep you turning the pages. An excellent and very well presented novel...okay, now I'm off to read book 2.” - M. Williams

Saving the world is such a bother when it makes you late for tea.

Love, Lies, and Hocus Pocus: Revelations (The Lily Singer Adventures, Book 2)

The truth shall make you free…sort of.

Modern-day wizard Lily Singer prefers to stay tucked away in her library, studying magic and drinking tea. But with a troublesome witch friend and a past riddled with dangerous secrets, her chances of peace and quiet are slim.

Armed with only wits and magic, she must manage her argumentative cat, thwart a plot to steal a powerful artifact, and decide who, amid all this, she can trust. The past, both ancient and modern, is catching up with her. Will discovering its secrets reveal her future, or doom it?  Perhaps some truths are better left unknown…

Now she must reconcile old grudges, make questionable allies, and bend the law to fix a problem that's not even her fault. Add to that having inconvenient feelings for her troublemaking witch friend while trying to date an overeager FBI agent, and Lily isn't sure she’s strong enough to face the future, much less overcome it.

When not writing she loves to play her ocarina (think Zelda), and also enjoys traditional archery, cosplay, larping, and art.

Growing up in rural Kentucky, she was thoroughly corrupted by a deep love for its rolling countryside, despite the mosquitoes and hay fever. She was instilled with a craving for literature early on, and her parents had to wrestle books away from her at the dinner table. Love, Lies, and Hocus Pocus: Beginnings (The Lily Singer Adventures, Book 1)

Magic, mayhem, and mystery combine in this exceptional debut novel from author Lydia Sherrer. A natural storyteller, Sherrer sets out from page one to spin her tale in a voice that is in turns both snarky and sincere, and you know right away you’re in for an unforgettable ride.

Book-loving Lily Singer—librarian, archivist, and wizard—prefers tea (with scones) to trouble any day. But with a friend like Sebastian, a witch who can’t seem to stay away from trouble, Lily rarely gets to stay snuggled up in her safe, cozy library for long. When trouble calls, Lily—however reluctantly at first—leaves her magic studies behind and joins forces with Sebastian, and together they harness their individual gifts and skills to battle the pesky magical forces of evil and world domination.

Sherrer is a world builder by nature, and she presents a unique perspective on the origins of supernatural gifts and the obligations they place on those so gifted. With a keen eye for human nature, she never gives us one-dimensional characters. Her world’s inhabitants—human and otherwise—have layers; their complex backstories give them credible motivation and make it impossible to characterize them as all bad or all good. They’re real, multidimensional beings, and Sherrer’s competent writing brings compassion, conscience, and empathy to the table, making her world easy to believe and hard to put down when the book ends.

So it’s a good thing she’s written a sequel…

Lydia Sherrer’s Beginnings offers readers a new look at modern fantasies, painting delightful, fast-paced dilemmas in episodic format. Her idiomatic chapters boast a crisp, learned tone. The slightly more formal episodes pair nicely with her humorous – and sometimes less-than-clean – interlude. The tension increases from one segment to the next, allowing readers a gradual look into the protagonist’s dreams, mirroring her own inability to face some of her deepest wants.

This magical parallel to our world takes readers into a vivid reality painted with love, laughter, and a great deal of research. This is a page-turning experience for even non-fantasy readers.

Love, Lies, and Hocus Pocus: Revelations (The Lily Singer Adventures, Book 2)

Lydia Sherrer ups the ante in Revelations, the second volume in her series, Love, Lies, and Hocus Pocus, where we find intrepid heroine and wizard Lily Singer making ever more skillful magic—and cranberry almond scones. In Book 2, Lily and her friend Sebastian Blackwell, Professional Witch, who has secrets of his own, venture into deeper and more sinister territory. Meanwhile, at home—and at the library—and in Lily’s car—and everywhere else Lily is, her cat, Sir Edgar Allan Kipling, has ramped up the attitude, found his voice, and started to—glow.

As both Lily and Sebastian increase in knowledge, wisdom, and skill, it becomes clear that both they and Sherrer’s skill as a writer and storyteller are growing exponentially. Sherrer’s commitment to presenting fully realized characters and to the underlying moral and ethical concerns of her protagonists is skillfully blended with suspenseful tale-telling, smart dialogue, and perhaps the snarkiest feline in recent literature. Readers of Sherrer’s first novel, Beginnings, will not be disappointed with this sequel—and if you didn’t read the first one, what are you doing here? Go buy Book 1 and read it—then come back here and snatch up Book 2. On second thought, just buy them both now— once you’ve devoured Beginnings, you won’t want to wait.

Make some tea and scones first. Trust me.

Revelations shows Lydia Sherrer’s ability to raise the stakes, evoking unexpected emotions and an absolute need to know more about the characters. Between two tidy, erudite chapters lies the more unkempt, informal interlude. The book features fast-paced, imaginative storytelling, and builds on the tension formed in its prequel, Beginnings.

Sherrer delivers the same eloquent style used in her first novel with great success. Though satisfying resolution is offered, a hunger for more is sure to find readers after finishing Revelations.

Hope: A Short Story

The thing I am always pleasantly disappointed in with a story like this is that I think I have the plot all figured out and then it turns around and puts me right on my ear.

Your day would be better for experiencing this story to the end. It's thoughtful, meaningful, and just the right amount of dark.

A dark post-apocalyptic tale that is full of hope, but perhaps not in the way you might think.

Sample Interview Questions

Also check out this Smashwords Interview: https://www.smashwords.com/interview/lydiasherrer

Q: What is the best thing about being a writer?

A: Being creative! My greatest love is getting lost in a good story, so getting to be the one to create it is even more special. It is a lot of work, but it is good work. I get to think about what ingredients are needed, and how to mix them all together to create something that is entertaining and impacting. For how much I hate cooking food, I sure do enjoy cooking up a good story!

Q: How did you first get inspired to write?

A: My first forays into writing was less the result of inspiration as it was of biological imperative. If you read enough, telling your own stories is a natural next step. I'd spent so much time reading, and my imagination was so vivid, there were already dozens of stories running through my brain by the time I was fourteen or so. I started writing to de-clutter my head and get some of those ideas on paper.

Q: How do you deal with writer’s block?

A: One of two ways, depending on what's really going on. First is when I just don't want to write, either because I feel lazy, or I want to do something else, or I'm distracted. That sort of writer's block you just have to park that butt in the chair and write whether you like it or not, even if it's terrible writing.

If I actually don't know what to write, or just can't figure out how to say what I need to say, I'll take a break and do something else for a bit. Either take a walk to get the creative juices flowing, or perhaps do research online on the book topic, to better equip me to make the words flow. If I'm really just sick of writing, doing something completely different like playing a game or watching a movie can relax and refresh my mind so that the words flow easily the next time I sit down at my desk. Sometimes you just get burnt out writing, and your brain needs a break. So give it one!

Q: What are you currently working on?

A: Promoting my debut books! Love, Lies, and Hocus Pocus - the Lily Singer Adventures, Book 1-Beginnings, and Book 2-Revelations are now available on Amazon for pre-order, and I have a whole month of promoting to do until the release date on April 30th.

But as far as writing goes, I've started Book 3: Allies in my Lily Singer Adventures series, and I have a dark urban fantasy novel in the works. You can read more about my current projects at lydiasherrer.com

Q: What is your advice for aspiring writers?

A: Read Read Read! Write Write Write! Really, those are the two best pieces of advice I could give anyone, because they are the foundation of EVERYTHING you do as a writer. You can't write good stories if you don't read good stories (or read craft books, advice columns, how-to writing blogs, current publishing news, etc), and you can't publish anything if you haven't actually written it! For more detailed advice, check out my becoming a writer series on my blog: http://lydiasherrer.com/becoming-a-writer-tip-1/
