STAR Courses 2018

STAR courses are for year 12 and 13 students.

In conjunction with the Government and secondary schools, polytechnics and other training providers are helping young people identify their vocational pathway by offering STAR courses which allow students to study programmes not available through their secondary school. This offers an opportunity for students to have a clear pathway into tertiary programmes or to achieve vocational credits alongside their school qualifications.

STAR courses are exclusively for students attending a New Zealand secondary school and enrolments must be made by the school STAR coordinator.

What is STAR? A Secondary Tertiary Alignment Resource (STAR) course introduces secondary school students to training for a specific career or study at tertiary level. STAR courses are short and are only available through polytechnics and private training organizations. Students participate in short-term programmes or ‘taster courses’ for a few days at a time, or one day per week for several weeks.

STAR Courses

The above courses typically run anywhere from 2 days for a short barista course up to 10 days one day per week for ten weeks for courses such as engineering. The credits available range from 2 credits through to 15 credits at various levels.

New Zealand School of Tourism

If you are interested in STAR courses in the Tourism Industry, for example “Flight Attending” or “Cruise and Hotel” courses please see Mr Clark.

Drivers Licence

Reminder to senior students who are gaining their drivers licence. We are able to give you $100.00 towards one part of your licence through STAR funding. It is over to you when you choose to claim this. If you do wish to claim your $100.00 please bring in the GST receipt to Mr Clark for this to be processed. (SC, all year)

If you are interested in attending a STAR course during the year please see Mr Clark or Mrs Williams in the Careers Office.

New Zealand Institute of Sport Holiday Gateway Courses

All courses run for one week (no course on public holidays), students gain 20 NCEA level 2 or 3 credits, get lunch on the first and last day and all activities on the course are covered in the cost (paid by school)!
