Human Body Children’s Book

Summative Project

We have been learning about the human body, and the different systems that interact to keep us alive. The human body systems we learned about were: integumentary, muscular, skeletal, respiratory, circulatory, reproductive, endocrine, and immune systems. To help you better understand these systems I want you to write a children’s book that explores these systems. You may choose to work alone or with one other person.

If you chose you may also write a song, draw a cartoon, or complete some other creative representation of the human body systems we covered in class. These other options require teacher approval before you begin.

View the guidelines below to help you write your children’s book:

  1. Cover is needed for children’s book. On the cover you should include:
  1. Title
  2. Author
  3. Illustration

  1. Create a copyright page for your book. A copyright page usually includes: copyright notice, printing history, cataloging data, publication information, printing history, and edition information. Be creative and make up your own information for this copyright page. View books to get ideas of what a copyright page looks like.

  1. Resources: In-text citation and a bibliography is required in your book. Citation must be in APA format. Remember that you must also cite photography and other works of art throughout your book. No credit will be given to your project unless you give credit where credit is due. Go here for Information on APA citation. You will need to include a minimum of four sources you used to create your story.

  1. Illustrations: You may draw and create your own illustrations or print off illustrations/create illustrations from the computer. Illustrations may also be taken from magazines, or other resources. All illustrations must be in color. The teacher will not provide any illustrations. Make sure if an illustration is taken from the computer, magazine, or other source that credit is given to the image in APA style format. Go here for information of APA citation.

  1. Pages in your book. The final book should have 12 or more pages including the cover, copyright, bibliography, and story pages. All story pages should include a colored illustration.

  1. Binding and overall appearance: All pages in your book should be bound in a neat fashion. Yarn generally works well, and will be provided to bind your book pages. You can also chose to bind your book in another way. All pages should be created with care and should be visually pleasing.

  1. Story: Come up with a creative and engaging story that explores the different systems of the human body. Think of a magic school bus episodes, for example when Ms. Frizzle takes her class on a field trip through Ralphie and explores his digestive system. Make sure the information you present on the human body systems is incorporated into your story, and is not displayed as facts, like a power point would be. Be sure to summarize information that you have gathered on the human body. If you copy information from any sources be sure to use in-text citation APA format.

  1. Human Body Systems: Be sure it include all of the human body systems within your story. Less credit will be given to stories that leave out systems. Be sure to include multiple facts about each human body system. Again, those facts should be incorporated into your story and not just displayed on the page.
