The Building Regulations and their influence on structure and size
Each team has been given a list of the Approved Documents which, when placed together, form the ‘Building Regulations’, as outlined in the Building Act 1984.
The overarching aims of the Building Regulations are to produce homes and commercial buildings that are safe and secure for occupants, as well being a method of implementing government policy on matters concerning building construction such as energy usage and minimising wastage.
They do this by:
- ensuring standards
- ensuring safety and hygiene
- improving energy efficiency
- reducing wastage - especially water

- In writing, summarise what you think the Approved Document achieves in terms of standards, safety, energy efficiency and reduction of waste.
- Explain one way the Approved Document that you are examining will affect the design of your building for your assessment.
