Movers and Shakers
Session Description
Movers and Shakers is the title of our Science, Poetry and Philosophy module that we teach once per week, for two ninety-minute blocks on a Friday, to thirty Year 9 students.
This is the description from our course booklet:
Movers and Shakers. What do scientists, philosophers and poets have in common?
Poetry, Philosophy and Science explore what it is to be human and attempt to understand the world and our place in it. This module will allow students to explore and make sense of some scientific issues that concern them. Students will share their ideas around scientific issues through constructing and delivering their own poetry, debating and creating podcasts or speeches.
Big Questions/ideas
Why do scientists change their minds? How is metaphor used by both scientists and poets?
How is today’s study of Science based on ideas of the ancient philosophers? What worries you most about the future for human beings and of our planet?
Overarching Learning Objectives
To explore and make sense of scientific issues by analysing texts, researching and finding personal relevance.
To share understanding of scientific issues by presenting oral text(s) to an audience.
