#RefugeeHack
What we want to do
We want to make public datasets that are relevant for broader debates about the current refugee crisis easily accessible and reusable, thus contributing to a better informed debate that is supported by facts, not gut feeling.
We are thus looking for
We will re-publish the datasets we free on GitHub (https://github.com/OKFNat/data) and post visualizations, analysis and applications on our blog, http://okfn.at/blog.
With our ongoing project Good deeds for good data (Gute Taten für Gute Daten) we are working to raise awareness about the use and power of open data in Austria. We also work to set publicly available datasets with meaningful information free – we take the data out of PDF files that are often hard to find and impossible to reuse. Then we make the data easily accessible, so that the information can be put to good use.

...and you?
Do you know of datasets that matters and that should be more easily accessible? Talk to us, let us know – and we can work on setting the data free: http://bit.ly/gutedatenwunsch |

Who applies for asylum in Austria?
We have already freed and aggregated the available for monthly asylum applications in Austria, broken down by nationality (https://github.com/OKFNat/data/tree/master/asyl).
Whom do we supply with arms and war materials?
The Austrian government does not publish any data on awarded licenses for arms exports, even Members of Parliament have been unable to get such information. However, an annual arms export report published by the EU’s External Action Service contains insightful data on exports from Austria and other countries, including the number of licenses, the value, and the recipient country of various types of goods that are used in armed conflict. This data published in the EU gazette has to be scraped, cleaned, analyzed, shared and visualized so that it becomes usable for citizens and journalists and can be easily reused.
Where does Austrian development aid go?
We have already scraped data on development projects funded by the Austrian Development Agency in recent years – you can find this data at https://github.com/OKFNat/data => “Entwicklungshilfe”.
Is there other data out there that in your view matters?
Then we can work on setting that free as well
