Sport Report 5th March 2015

School rallies, Swimming Carnivals and Grand Finals were the order of business for Week 4 and what a memorable week it was for Holy Cross. At the end of a busy summer season of MCC sport, Holy Cross finished with two sides entering the Grand Finals. Our Under 16 Cricket and A-Grade Touch Football teams pushing right through to the final game.

To prepare for these Grand Finals, the school held a pep-rally on Wednesday afternoon in order to celebrate the achievements of these teams, and to let the players know that they had the support of 600 of their peers behind them. Our Touch Football and Cricket Grand-Finalists were introduced to the school and presented their Jerseys and Baggies’ in-front of a packed College Hall with their teachers and class-mates cheering them on.

This atmosphere streamed into the Grand Finals with our Cricketers travelling to Scarborough Park to take on Marist College, Kogarah. In a hard-fought game, our boys were not able to take the victory but should be very proud of their efforts. This team finished 4th in the competition and made the Grand final by defeating the Minor-premiers last week. Mr Craven and Mr Signorelli are both extremely proud of their side and hopefully the boys can continue to improve next season.

In our A-Grade Touch Football Grand Final students from Year 7 and Year 12 were sent to Tempe Velodrome to cheer on our defending champions. Touch Football has become one of our strongest sports at Holy Cross and our A-Grade side is full of talented players who are at the elite level of their game. With over 200 supporters behind them, Holy Cross was too strong for our opponents and went on to win the Grand Final 10-3 in a resounding victory. Congratulations to Mr Whitty and his team for winning back-to-back premierships in the MCC. The College is immensely proud of their efforts.

On Friday, the College held its Annual Swimming Carnival at Ryde Aquatic Centre. This year’s carnival was held in two sections. Our Elite Swimmers came to the pool at 7:30am to compete for our Holy Cross Swim squad, as well as compete for age championships. In exciting news, Ben Crook of Year 7 has broken the record for the Under 12’s 50m Backstroke. Ben posted a time of 37.63 seconds, beating the previous record set by Jacob Molloy in 2007.

I would like to congratulate the following students on their victories as Age Champions:

Under 12: Ben Crook

Under 13: Eden Horne

Under 14: Jackson Bursill

Under 15: Lachlan Hall

Under 16: Charles Brooks

Opens: Cooper Henwood

At the conclusion of the Elite Carnival, the rest of the College community met at the pools for a day of friendly house competition. Students competed in several events such as Water Polo, Water Volleyball, 25/50m Races, Tug Of War, Indoor Soccer as well as the Relay races. Students were also treated to the Water Slide and the Inflatable obstacle course in what was an enjoyable day for students and teachers.

The winning house for the Swimming Carnival 2015 was the Delany House. The Carnival was tight between two houses all day and the championship was decided in the final Relay race of the day. A House V House v Teacher race. Delany’s victory in this race gave them the final points to jump the Dwyer house and win the Carnival by a mere 6 points. Congratulations to Delany captain Mackenzie Baldwin and his team for a fantastic effort.

I would particularly like to acknowledge the senior class of 2015. Without their enthusiasm and leadership, this year’s carnival would not have been the success that it was. I hope that future senior groups look to the camaraderie and passion that this class has for the College and take them for the great role models that they have become.
