Studio Inventory p. 87 (472A): Head and shoulders of Mr Esmond Harmsworth. This Head and shoulders was painted on the same canvas as No. 42. It was divided into two so that Sir Roger Keyes might have his portrait. / Re-stretched 1938.
This is a preparatory work for the three-quarter length portrait of the sitter [4744]. It is noted in the Studio Inventory made after the artist’s death that the picture was painted on the same canvas as no. 472. a portrait of Sir Roger Keyes [5990] in his uniform as Admiral of the Fleet. It was divided into two so that Keyes might have his portrait and both pictures re-stretched in 1938.
