Dear Marczi –

I got your kind letter of the 8th – and I was interested in what you wrote – in the meantime I received a very nice – official letter from Mr Hóman, the Minister^[1] – in which he thanked me for my Magdolna painting [2932]. Bárczi [sic] wrote to me too – he has been in Dresden taking a cold cure – he is better now – and he thanked me for the tea – etc. He’s a good fellow.

As far as my news goes, I have been laid up for the past 8 days because of my teeth – inflammation at the roots, so they took out five teeth – and made false ones for me – I was in a lot of pain but am better now.

We have decided – since both of us are in dire need of a rest – that at the end of this month we will go straight to St Raffael [sic] again – on the Riviera for a complete rest – reading, a bit of golf – perhaps some sketching – and I will get on with the story of my life as well – around 20th February we set off to Florence for a week – we’re invited to stay with people there – and then to Cann [sic] again – where

we have also been invited to stay for a few days in a delightful place on the sea.

At the end of February – or in early March we will set off home via Pest – So be patient until then, old thing – Before I do anything, I need to give myself a complete rest – and Lucy too^[2] – just keep the family in the dark – and I don’t want to see Sándor, I know his aim is to come here –

I know you will understand – I enclose a cheque with this – please, in my name – settle what I owe to the Műcsarnok– and do it at once – by Post –

Otherwise the family is fine – Stephen’s factory goes from strength to strength; I hope you will see it in the summer – Paul and Henry are both busy – Johny has gone back to Oxford –^[3]

How are you – and your business? What decision did you come to with regard to Dezső?^[4] What news from Bpest? We have a lot of things to take care of – sorting everything out before our travels – and I have two portraits to finish – When we get back – I’ll get down to my magnum opus^[5] – and will only paint one or two portraits –

Kedves Marczim –

E hó 8. ról K. leveledet vettem – s érdekelt a miről írtál – közbe kedves – officiel levelet kaptam Hóman Ministertől – melyben megköszöni a Magdolna-czímű képemet. Bárczi [sic] is irt – a ki Drezdában volt hideg cura miadt – most jól van – s megköszönte a teát – etc. Jó fiu.

A mi engem illet az utolso 8 nap alatt kellemetlenségeim vannak nehány fogaimmal – melyeknek gyökerei meg voltak gyuladva s öt fogat kivettek – s imitátio fogakat keszítenek – sok fájdalommal járt de jobban vagyok.

Elhatároztuk – miután mintkettőnknek nagy szükségünk van pihenésre – hogy ismét e hó vegével egyenesen indulunk St Raffaelbe [sic] – a Rivierára ott teljes pihenőre megyünk – olvasni egy kis golfot játszani – s talán vázalni – továbbá a életem könyvével foglalkozni – február 20 ika táján egy hétre Florenczbe indulunk – a hogy vendegségbe leszünk – s ismét Cannba [sic] – a hol

néhány napot egy gyönyörű helyen a tengeren szintén vendégül leszünk.

Február végen – vagy márczius elején Pesten át indulunk haza – Tehát öregem addig legyetek türelemmel – Kell hogy előbb teljesen pihenjek – valamint Lucym is – a csaladdal hagyd bizonytalanságba – s Sándorral nem akarok találkozni, mert tudom czélja ide jönni –

Tudom megfogysz érteni – mellékelve egy cheque – légy szives nevemben – adóságomat a Műcsarnokkal szemben kiegyenlíteni – de azonnal – Postaútján –

Különben a család jól van – a Stephen gyára naprol napra emelkedik, melyet reméllem az idén nyáron látni fogsz – Paul s Henry is elvannak foglalva – Johny visszament Oxfordba –

Te miként vagy – s üzleted? Vajjon miként hataroztok Dezső ügyében? Mi ujság Bpesten, most sok a dolgunk – mindent elintézni az utazás előtt – s befejezni egy két arczképet – s mire vissza jövünk – nagy munkámhoz fogok – s csak nehány arczkepet fogok festeni –
