*difference between: this, that, these, and those

spoke: v. past tense of “speak”; to talk, to utter words, to serve as the spokesperson; to use in talking- “to speak Spanish”; to express feelings in ways other than by words- “actions speak louder than words”

mile: n. a unit of measure equal to 5,280 feet or 1609 meters

save: v. to deliver from sin; to rescue or deliver from danger; to keep from injury, destruction, waste, or loss; to store; to put aside for future use, like money; to keep from being lost- “to save the game”; to avoid- “It will save you from having to go back again.” n. a play that prevents an opponent from scoring.

ex/cuse: v. present tense. to make an apology for; to overlook or dismiss as of little importance; to release from doing something; to allow to leave; to be an acceptable reason for, to justify; to pardon or forgive. n. something that excuses or is a reason for excusing.

cone: n. a mass of overlapping woody scales especially in pines and other conifers, arranged like a stem and produce seeds between them (pine cones); a solid figure that slopes evenly to a point from a circular base (math/geometry); something shaped like a cone (retina, tip of a volcano, an icecream cone)

in/vite: v. to request the presence or participation of; to request formally or politely; to make more likely. n. an invitation- the act of inviting that is written, printed, or spoken.

cube: n. the solid body having six equal square sides; the result of raising a number to the third power. v. to cut a checkered pattern into- “to cube a steak.

price: n. the cost at which something is gotten or done; the quantity of one thing and especially money that is exchanged or demanded in exchange for something else; a reward; a charge, a fee, leads to a mean of payment in exchange for something. v. to set a price on; to ask the price of.

e/rase: v. to rub out as something written; to remove written or drawn marks from; to delete from a computer storage device; to remove as if by erasing- “to erase an event from one’s memory,” an unpleasant experience.

ripe: adj. something that is fully grown and developed; having mature knowledge, understanding, or judgment; ready- “ripe for action”; brought to just the right state

broke: v. past tense of “break.” to separate into parts suddenly or forcibly; to fracture a bone; to fail to keep/violate (the law, a promise); to curl over and fall apart; to force away; to cut into (the ground); to bring to an end (a habit); to solve; to open (a circuit); without (money)

skate: n. a metallic runner fitting the sole of a shoe or a shoe with a permanently attached runner used for gliding on ice (roller skate). v. to slide along on skates; to slide or move as if on skates. ice skate or in-line skate.

life: n. the quality that separates plants and animals from things such as water or rocks; a state of a living thing marked by capacity for metabolism, growth, reaction to stimuli, and reproduction; all the experiences that make up the existence of a person (biography); a way or manner of living; energy or spirit in action or expression; the period of usefulness (battery life). adj. relating to living existence; lifelong.

done: v. past participle of “do.” to cause an act or action to happen; to carry out, behave, or perform (do as I say, do me a favor); to work at (do your homework); to decorate; to put forth/exert (do your best effort); finished. well-done- done right or cooked thoroughly.

these: plural of “this.” pronoun. the person, thing, or idea that is present or near in time, place, or thought that has just been mentioned. adj. the nearer at hand that is referred to (these books are mine)

those: plural of “that.” pronoun. a noun mentioned or understood from the situation; the kind or thing specified as follows; the one farther away (those are elms, these are maples). adj. being the one named or understood (those chairs belong to the school)

sur/prise: n. an attack made without warning; an act or an instance of coming upon someone suddenly; something that surprises or the state of being surprised, astonishment. v. to attack without warning, to capture by an unexpected attack; to fill with wonder or amazement because unexpected.

de/cide: v. to give a judgment on; to bring to a final end; to cause to come to a choice or judgment

e/vent: n. something usually of importance that happens, a social occasion or activity (a party); eventuality; any of the contests in a program of sports; a possible result in an experiment in probability or statistics.

hon/or: n. a good name or public admiration, a reputation; a showing of respect, recognition; a privilege; capitalized, especially as a title for an official of high rank (as a judge); one whose worth brings respect or fame, credit; evidence or a symbol of great respect (a title or medal); high moral standards of behavior, integrity. v. to treat with honor, respect; to fulfill the terms of. honor guard, honor system, maid of honor.

re/fresh/ments: n. the act of refreshing, the state of being refreshed; something that refreshes; a light meal

at/tend: v. to be present with; to go to or be present at; to go to or stay with especially as a companion or servant; to pay attention to; to give one’s attention; to take charge of, look after, to accompany.
