A Moment of BAN

America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.”

- Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865)

In the Beginning

"...Its inhabitants, who are for the most part foreigners and made up of every nation except Americans so to speak, have in general no mind for anything but business. New York might be described as a permanent fair in which two-thirds of the population is always being replaced; where huge business deals are being made, almost always with fictitious capital, and where luxury has reached alarming heights... It is in the countryside and in the inland towns that one must look for the American population of New York State."

The new French consul gave a report of NYC in 1810. Quoted by Fernand Braudel, The Perspective of the World, 1984 p 406, in Wiki).

Daf Bite  –   טעם דף

Our Gemara relates a story that occurred in Bnei Brak, where someone who inherited property from his father sold it and died soon afterwards. Family members then claimed in court that the person who sold the property was underage at the time that it was sold and that the sale should be cancelled. Rabbi Akiva heard the case together with the suggestion that the body be exhumed in order to ascertain whether he had reached maturity before he died. Rabbi Akiva ruled that he could not allow for nivul ha-met – desecration of the dead – in such a case; furthermore, he argued that the physical condition of the body changes after death, so that examining the body would not offer a definitive clarification of the situation. (Daf Yomi from Steinsaltz.org; Bava Batra 154a-b)

A Story - of a flower

"Who are you?" asked the little prince, and added, "You are very pretty to look at."

"I am a fox," the fox said.

"Come and play with me," proposed the little prince. "I am so unhappy."

"I cannot play with you," the fox said. "I am not tamed."

"Ah! Please excuse me," said the little prince.

But, after some thought, he added:

"What does that mean--'tame'?"

"You do not live here," said the fox. "What is it that you are looking for?"

"I am looking for men," said the little prince. "What does that mean--'tame'?"

"Men," said the fox. "They have guns, and they hunt. It is very disturbing. They also raise chickens. These are their only interests. Are you looking for chickens?"

"No," said the little prince. "I am looking for friends. What does that mean--'tame'?"

"It is an act too often neglected," said the fox. It means to establish ties."

"'To establish ties'?"

"Just that," said the fox. "To me, you are still nothing more than a little boy who is just like a hundred thousand other little boys. And I have no need of you. And you, on your part, have no need of me. To you, I am nothing more than a fox like a hundred thousand other foxes. But if you tame me, then we shall need each other. To me, you will be unique in all the world. To you, I shall be unique in all the world ..."

"I am beginning to understand," said the little prince. "There is a flower ... I think that she has tamed me ..."

(Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, The Little Prince)

Red Heifer, or Brown one?

The Talmud states that the red heifer - para aduma - was a rarity since it had to be completely red. According to Ernest Klein adom comes from dam and means the "the color of blood". But is blood really red?

Jacob Milgrom has suggested that the word aduma, translated as ‘red,’ really means ‘brown’ and the rarity consisted in it having to be completely brown without any white or black streaks or spots.

While we are waiting for the right heifer, we may use the word adom in its two meanings in modern Hebrew slang:

a) a fan of the teams belonging to the sport association HaPoel, and b) an old-fashioned, albeit still used, term for a leftist.

On the Parasha & Beyond…

Parasha: Ḥukat - Bamidbar (Numbers) 19:1-22:1

Parasha's Historical Context: Creation Time: 2487 (1437 bce). Bnei Israel's 40-year journey is close to an end: Entering Midbar Tsin on the First Month continuing to Kadesh, Hor Hahar, Ovot, Arnon, Shitim, to name a few stops, and finally encamped in the plains of Moab, across the Jordan from Jericho.

Parasha in Short: The laws of the Parah Adumah- the Red Heifer, are detailed; In Nissan of the 40th year, Miriam died. The well dried up and the nation gathered against Moshe and Aharon to complain; The "hitting of the rock" occurred and Moshe and Aharon were refused entry into Erets Yisrael; Moshe requested from Edom permission to travel through their land on the way to Erets Yisrael. Edom refused; Aharon died and Elazar succeeded his father as Kohain Gadol. They encountered the southern Cannanites and bested them in battle. Following Aharon's death the protective clouds departed and the nation began to complain about the living conditions. Hashem sent poisonous snakes to attack the nation and Moshe was instructed to create the "copper snake on a stick" that miraculously saved the bitten; The nation traveled to Yeshimon - northeast of the Dead Sea. Bne Yisarel are refused access to the lands of Sihon and Og and Moshe led them into victorious battle against them.

Haftara: Ḥukat - Shoftim (Judges), 11:1-33

Haftit: Yiftach is expelled from his home by his brothers and becomes a warrior outside Eretz Yisrael. The Jews are attacked by the Amonim, and the elders of Gilead ask Yiftach to become a leader. Yiftach responded by asking, “What has changed that now I am good enough for you?”  Yiftach agrees to lead on condition that if he wins, the Elders must make him the leader of the Israelites. Yiftach asks Hashem to help him, and if he is victorious, Yiftach vows he will bring a sacrifice to Hashem of the first living thing he sees upon his return.

Connection to the Parsha: In this week’s Parsha, Parshat Chukas, the nation of Israel does battle with the Ammonites in order to conquer the land of Israel, situated, east of the Jordan River. In this week’s Haftorah, Yiftach is called upon by the elders of Israel, also to do battle with Ammon, only this time it was Israel who was being attacked. (Haftorhaman)

Rav Question - שאלת רב

Can a woman add the names of the Mothers to Birkat haAvot of Shəmone Esre? “...Eloke Avraham Yitshak, Yaakov, Sara, Rivka, Lea, and Rahel...” Can a man add it?

Makom baParasha - Naal eshbon

Nahal Arnon, The Arnon Stream has been identified by all researchers as Wadi Mujib, a river in Jordan which enters the Dead Sea from the east, about 420 metres (1,380 ft) below sea level.

The Arnon Stream, has always been an important boundary-line. In the Bible it is mentioned on a few occasions as separating the Moabites from the Amorites (Numbers 21:13-26; Deuteronomy 3:8; Judges 11:18).

After the settlement of the 12 Tribes in the Holy Land, it divided Moab from the tribes of Reuben and Gad (Deuteronomy 3:12-16). But it may have been that the border was somewhat to the north. Under the kings of Israel, Omri and Ahab, who held part of the Moabite territory, Israel did not hold sway farther south than ‘Atarot, about ten miles north of the Arnon.

(Picture: Gorge of the River Arnon Near Its Mouth. From Stade, Germany "Geschichte des Volkes Israel.")

King Moab, Mesha in his inscription, the Mesha Stele, says that the Gadites formerly occupied Ataroth, whence he in turn expelled the people of Israel. Such inscriptions however, came many times to show glory rather than truth.

The ancient importance of the river and of the towns in its vicinity is attested by the numerous ruins of bridges, forts, and buildings found upon or near it. Its fords are alluded to by the Book of Isaiah (16:2). Its "heights," crowned with the castles of chiefs, were also celebrated in verse (Numbers 21:28). (wiki)

Rega’ shel Ivrit - רגע של עברית

John Montagu (1718-1792), 4th Earl of Sandwich, England, ordered his assistant to bring him meat tucked between two pieces of bread, because it allowed him to continue playing cards, particularly cribbage, while eating, without using a fork, and without getting his cards greasy from eating meat with his bare hands. Soon, others began to order their food "the same as Sandwich!” Hence, is the word: sandwich.

In Hebrew however we have the word “karikh - כָּרִיךְ“ which is traced to the times of the Mishna, as we see in the Passover Haggada:

“Remembrance to the Temple. So did Hillel the Elder when the Temple was still standing: he was wrapping כּוֹרֵךְ matsa and marror and ate it together, to fulfill what is said: "On matsot and merorim they shall eat it."

Sandwich & friends normally had their sandwich to-stay, but sometimes they needed it to-go. The Hebrew compatible next week b”H.

Riddle Solved

Independence was declared from Britain in 1776.

In the 1790 census the USA population was close to 4 million, and today is close to 335 million (A few millions for the undocumented were added :)

NYC’s 5 boroughs population was around 49,000 in 1790, although the 4 boroughs joined New York City (Manhattan) only in the late 1890s. Today the official City population is over 8.5 million.

In 1790 the Bronx population was about 2 thousands and today it’s over 1.5 million.

Riverdale’s population today is approx. 50,000. In 1790 it was... you guess!

In the News this Week

This past week, 103 years ago, June 28, 1914, a "shot heard around the world."

The phrase refers to the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria in 1914 in Sarajevo, which triggered the break of WWI, which caused the collapse of the old world order that was dominated by the Empires, and which was followed by the planting of the seeds of WWII and the Holocaust.

The Phrase also refers to the opening of the American Revolutionary War in 1775; and the 1951 game-winning, three-run homer by the New York Giants’ Bobby Thomson against the Brooklyn Dodgers; thanks to Thomson’s “shot,” the Giants nabbed the National League pennant.

What unites the 3 events is the Hebrew word "kadur" which stands for both bullet and ball :)
