Mid-Atlantic Flute Fair: Call for Proposals!

The program committee invites you to submit proposals for the 2014 Mid-Atlantic Flute Fair.

Suggestion/Guidelines for submitting your proposals:

  • Name(s) of Performer(s)
  • Program with composers, dates, etc. and length (there are no events over 50 minutes!)
  • Extract or outline of the proposed workshop/lecture
  • A 2-3 sentence description of your program 
  • Equipment needed, if other than music stand (include music stands if more than five)
  • If you are submitting a full performance program, are you willing to play on a shared program?
  • Were you a performer/lecture/workshop at the 2013 Mid-Atlantic Flute Fair?
  • Bio, not to exceed 100 words. Groups should submit a group bio.

The Flute Society of Washington invites you to attend a Flute Spa with Patricia George on Saturday, November 2, 2013 from 9:30-4:30Pm at the Church of the Good Shepherd located at 9350 Braddock Rd, Burke, VA.  The Flute Spa is free to current FSW members and $20 for non-member adults and $10 for non-member students (this will be applied to your 2014 membership dues).  

By definition, a visit to a spa is meant to invigorate you, to make you stop and take time to think, to relax, to reassess why you do what you do. In this case, a Flute Spa is designed to give you some new perspectives on how to approach your flute playing—everything from scales to body position to practice technique. Even though this spa won’t feature massages, manicures or hot tubs, we know that you will come away with a new focus for your performing and practicing skills. Patricia George has presented Flute Spas to rave reviews at flute clubs throughout the United States and at the NFA Convention.  

9:30 - Hour 1---FUNdamentals (Setup, Articulation, Vibrato and Embouchure Flexibility)

10:30 - Hour 2--Building a Warmup and Practice Routine

11:30 - Hour 3--Phrasing 101- Down/up and Forward Flow

12:30 - Lunch - Bring your own bag lunch or visit one of the nearby restaurants

1:30 - Hour 4--Scale Game for Technical and Musical Development

2:30 - Hour 5 - Rules of Phrasing

3:30 - Hour 6 - Sightreading to put the ideas into practice or How to learn the impossible.

Auditions for  the Capital Wind Symphony

The Capital Wind Symphony has one to two flute vacancies that need filling for 2013-2014 concert season.  Auditions will be held on Monday nights in October.  Audition repertoire and contact information is listed on www.capitalwindsymphony.org.  Please forward a resume with your audition request.

Patagonia Winds Live!

The Patagonia Winds presents the opening concert of its 2013-2014 season on Friday, October 4th at 7:30 p.m. at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church

(432 Van Buren St., Herndon, VA). Now in its fourth year together, the professional wind quintet offers a lively program the whole family will enjoy, including classic Beethoven, majestic Holst, light-footed Grieg, and noteworthy Jongen. Admission is free; there is a Free will offering to benefit the St. Timothy’s Organ Fund.

Celebrate New Orleans!

The Woodbridge Flute Choir, under the direction of Debbie Gilbert and assisted by Lisa Sheldone will “Celebrate New Orleans!” on Saturday, October 12, 2013 at 7:00PM at Westminster at Lake Ridge.  The concert is FREE!

Part of this concert will reprise the concert that The Woodbridge Flute Choir performed recently at the National Flute Association Convention in New Orleans.  They presented a program honoring the music of New Orleans, including the world premiere of a new piece by Greg Lutz commissioned by the group for the convention called A Couple of Scenes from New Orleans.  This piece depicts life in the city, with movements such as “A Busy Day in the Vieux Carré,” “The City That Care Forgot,” and “Stroll Your Feet Down Bourbon Street.”  They also performed a tango-styled piece by Pascal Proust, Naranjada, and a New Orleans style “second line” piece called Pontchartrain in the tradition of brass band parades.

In addition to the pieces performed at the convention they will also perform Fanfare by Deborah Anderson, Solemnities by Alexandra Molnar-Suhajda, Latin Verbs by Jonathan Cohen and The Girl from Ipanema by Antonia Carlos Jobim and arranged for flute choir by Kelly Via.

CLAIRE CHASE

The Atlas welcomes 2012 MacArthur Fellow, Claire Chase to the stage as she uses her passion for playing the flute to push the instrument beyond traditional notes. Chase has given critically acclaimed solo recitals recently at Weill Recital Hall as part of the Great Performers Series at Lincoln Center. As a soloist, collaborative artist and arts entrepreneur, Chase has premiered over 100 new works for flute in the past decade. She is also founder of the award winning International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE).

Peter Brown Memorial Concert

The Levine School will be presenting a memorial concert in memory of the late Peter Brown, flutist and Levine faculty member.  It will be a benefit concert to establish a flute scholarship at Levine.  NSO principal flutist Aaron Goldman will be our guest soloist.  He'll be playing "Golden Sunset" by David Heath for solo flute and flute choir accompaniment.  Additionally he will be performing Boehm's "Grande Polonaise".

FSW member Michelle Rubis is sponsoring a Body Mapping Workshop with Lea Pearson on Saturday, October 26, 2013 from 1:00-2:30PM and she has a few slots open for FSW members. The cost is $30.00 per person.  Lea will also be available for private lessons both before and after the workshop. Body Mapping is a fun way to explore how your joints and muscles work when you play the flute so that you can play more comfortably without pain and with freer and fuller breaths.

Lea Pearson's book, Body Mapping for Flutists: What Every Flute Teacher Needs to Know About the Body has received extensive praise from teachers and students alike, and has been translated into Chinese and Japanese. Lea was a 1998 Fulbright Scholar at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, where she studied with Liisa Ruoho. Formerly a performer with the South Bend Symphony, she holds a B.A. degree from Hampshire College, an M.A. from Stanford University and a D.M.A. from Ohio State University. Her teachers have included Katherine Borst Jones, Frances Blaisdell and Doriot Anthony Dwyer. Lea is a licensed Andover Educator, presenting Body Mapping workshops and masterclasses worldwide.

CPSB Fall Concert on November 2, 2013

 

The Capitol Pride Symphonic Band (CPSB) will present its fall concert, Epics!, on Saturday, November 2, 2013 at 7:30 p.m. at the Columbia Heights Educational Campus Auditorium, 3101 16th Street NW, Washington, D.C. The concert will feature selections including the Enigma Variations, Trittico, and Gavorkna Fanfare, just to name a few.

 

Admission for adults is $20, students/seniors is $10, and children 12 and under are free when accompanied by an adult. Tickets will be available through the online DCDD Box Office later this month or may be purchased at the door.

Columbia Flute Choir

Columbia Flute Choir in Concert to benefit Brother's Brother Foundation in the Sanctuary of Columbia Baptist Church, 103 West Columbia Street, Falls Church, VA, 22046.

Highlights of this concert will include the World Premier of a major flute choir work by Alexandra Molnar-Suhajda, as well as popular favorites by Vincenzo Sorrentino, Catherine McMichael, and a new piece by Vincenzo Palermo. The concert is free and open to the public. Donations for Brother's Brother Foundation will be accepted. Reception to follow.

Woodbridge Flute Choir Sixth Concerto Competition

 

 The Woodbridge Flute Choir is sponsoring its sixth concerto competition and scholarship for high school students aged 14-18.  The winner will receive a $500 scholarship award and will perform the concerto with the Woodbridge Flute Choir at its March 23, 2014 concert in the Gregory Theater of the Hylton Performing Arts Center located at d at 10960 George Mason Circle, Manassas, VA 20109.  The concert will be held at 3:00PM.

  The required repertoire is one movement of a flute concerto arranged and published for flute solo and flute choir.  The entry deadline is January 6, 2014.

Save the Date for the 21st Annual Hampton Roads Flute Faire in Norfolk, Virginia. This year's exciting two-day event will take place on March 21 & 22, 2014 and features Flutronix, the critically acclaimed pair of fresh and eclectic flutists who are paving the way from their classical roots to the future of music. 

Friday night, March 21st, Flutronix will present a concert at the historic Attucks Theater in Norfolk, VA. Saturday's all-day event includes workshops with Flutronix, masterclasses, flute choirs in concert, flute choir reading session, exciting vendors

and more.

The backbone of our event is our flute competition for Elementary, Middle, High School, College and Adult Amateur. Prizes awarded in each division.
