Because guitars vary so much in shape, materials, age, colors, etc… and customers vary so much in what they want out of their instruments, our pricing contains the same great amount of variation.  We know it appears complicated.  Don’t worry though, we’ve provided some common examples to cut through some of the confusion.  If you’re still throwing your hands up after reading through them, just drop us a line and we’ll talk you through the whole process.

Example 3

Guitar/part

MIM Jazz Bass with Rosewood fingerboard

Condition received

Very lightly used, fully assembled

Service requested

Questions we’ll ask

Do you want the finish stripped? Since this body is in good condition, the customer elects to have the new finish applied over the existing one.

Will you send the bass fully assembled? This customer has elected to have us disassemble and reassemble the bass.  We are happy to accept parts assemble or disassembled.  If we do the reassembly, our pricing does not include setup or strings.  We will return the instrument to the condition in which we received it.

Pricing breakdown

Example 4

Guitar/part

Custom Martin-style acoustic - Cocobolo back and sides, spruce top, mahogany neck, plastic binding

Condition received

New, recently built, bridge gluing surface masked, finely sanded

Service requested

Clear Gloss Poly

Questions we’ll ask

How do you want the grain filled? Cocobolo and mahogany are both porous and so require some sort of grain filler.  Since this customer has requested a Poly finish, we can let the polyester sealer fill the grain so that no visual change is made to the wood.  We recommend using a paste or epoxy filler on acoustics and guitars with intricate angles because it minimizes the amount of polyester required to level the surface.  Paste filler will change the look of the wood, but this can be very appealing.  This customer has requested a dark paste filler to help “bring together” the look of the Mahogany and Cocobolo.

Is the neck bolted or set? This instrument has a set neck joint

Pricing breakdown

$60 Grain filler - both the neck ($25) and body($35) require filler.

$451 Poly Acoustic finish, Clear

Total price

$511

Turn-around

3-4 weeks

Example 5

Guitar/part

70’s Gibson Les Paul Custom, Black

Condition received

Fully assembled, heavily worn, dinged, chipped, previously repaired neck break, extra holes drilled for hardware that’s come and gone...you know the guitar...an old Les Paul that’s had a few owners and been played by them all...a lot...in a lot of smoky, dirty bars.

Service requested

make it look new

Questions we’ll ask

Do you want it Finished in Nitro as it was originally? This customer wants it as close to stock as possible, so yes.

Do you want the original finish stripped? Once again, since the customer wants it returned as closely as possible to stock, he has requested the old finish stripped.

Will you be sending it fully assembled? Yes

Are you aware that the embossed serial number will be less visible or not visible at all after a refinish?  This customer had not thought of this but was OK after we told him that we’d take photos of the serial number before and after stripping in order to maintain documentation.  With a Nitro finish, the serial number will become visible after a few months as the lacquer sinks.

Pricing breakdown

$135  Disassembly/reassembly

$225  Stripping set neck guitar with carved top

$  75  Extra prep time to repair heavily worn/repaired surfaces

$567  Nitro full guitar finish, Solid (non-metallic) color

$147  Binding upcharge - $49 per bound surface - top, back, neck

$  49  Carved top upcharge - carved tops take more time to sand and buff

Total price

$1198

Turn-around

4-8 weeks

Example 6

Product Descriptions

Poly - Our best value.  Poly is durable, It is very resistant to fading from UV exposure, yellowing and checking.  Once cured, it is impervious to virtually any chemical, alcohol, cleaner...whatever it might come in contact with.  We take great care in application and sanding so the final finish is thin, consistent and slick.  You will not get a “goopy” finish from us.

If you’re having trouble deciding between poly and nitro, ask yourself this: “Do I need nitro?”  If you don’t “need” it, then go with poly.

Nitro - We use 100% nitrocellulose lacquer in this finish.  Nitro is generally inferior to poly.  This is a much debated topic.  Nitro can sometimes be repaired more easily than poly.  It adheres more easily to oily woods than poly.  Other than that, it is completely inferior and should only be chosen if you have experience with it and feel that it is the right finish for you.

Modern Perfect Nitro (MPN) - “the best of both worlds” - This finish begins with a polyester sealer coat.  This sealer coat allows us to quickly get a stable, level surface on which to lay down nitro color and clear.  The thinner nitro coat will be less likely to check.  The finish will be much more resistant to sinking.

Oil - A combination of lin seed based oil finish and paste wax.  This finish is most popular on necks and non-porous woods.  It can be very nice on whole instruments and porous woods.  It is our least durable finish.  It does require regular re-application.

ProSat Poly - This is a satin sheen, super thin poly finish.  There is no pore filling and minimal leveling.  Players seeking a close-to-the-wood feel that’s more durable and offers a wider range of colors than oil will love this finish.  It is also a good base finishing for aging.

ProSat Nitro - This is the same process as our ProSat Poly, but in nitrocellulose lacquer.

Stay classy San Diego
