Dangerous Household Reactions

  1. Open the online resources below and quickly read through the information in them.
  1. Next, pick 1 of the combinations of household chemicals that can produce dangerous products when mixed. (You need to pick 1 of the ones mentioned in the resources in #1.)
  2. Use the highlighter toolto highlight the resource/ link in #1 that you used to find information about your specific reaction (the one you just picked in step 2).
  3. Lastly, research and answer the questions in the table below about the reaction/combination of chemicals that you decided on in #2. Write in complete sentences to answer these questions. Write the information in your own words. Use proper grammar, punctuation and spelling.
  1. What two chemicals did you pick (from the ones listed in the resources) to research? Hint: these are the two reactants that make the dangerous reaction happen.

  1. List 2 examples of where you would find the chemical compounds mentioned in A. (1 for each chemical/reactant). Hint: What products are they used in? Do they have a common name? What room might they be found in?

The first reactant…

The second reactant…

  1. What is the dangerous product(s) that forms when you mix the chemicals in A? (What are they called- write the name(s)?)

  1. Write a word equation for the reaction that happens when your two chemicals mix. Write the reactants to the left of the arrow and the products to the left. Use + signs to separate each reactant and each product.

  1. List 2 or more dangers/health hazards for your product(s). Hints: Why is the product(s) of your reaction so dangerous? What can it do to people? What damages can they cause? Be specific (don’t just say it can make you sick or poison you). What body part(s) might be damaged? What kind of damage can happen? How might it kill you?
