The sender, Hugh de Twenebrooks Glazebrook, was a portrait and landscape painter. He was elected a member of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters in 1891. The recipient, Theodore Blake Wirgman, was a painter and etcher. Wirgman made his reputation as a portrait painter, exhibiting works throughout his career at the Royal Academy. He produced monochrome portraits of eminent men for The Graphic and worked for Sir John Everett Millais and the Duke and Duchess of York, amongst others.
