Dear Sir,

I should be so much obliged if you would let me know your fee for painting a portrait of my daughter [6859].[1] She was painted by Mr. Ralph Peacock[2] in 1927 & the portrait was exhibited in the Royal Academy the following year.[3] She is just over six years of age & I enclose a photograph of her which please return at your convenience:

Yours faithfully

Arthur Bendir

[1] De László’s secretary replied that the fee for a head and shoulders portrait would be 500 guineas, and for a sketch portrait 300 guineas, see DLA058-0063, letter from de László’s secretary to Arthur Bendir, 6 March 1930.

[3] Peacock’s picture was singled out in a contemporaneous review: “When the Royal Academy opened yesterday to the public visitors quickly decided what pictures they liked best. The most popular portrait was that of Miss Jane Bendir by Ralph Peacock”, ‘The Public Judge the Academy’, London Daily Chronicle, 8 May 1928, p. 5.
