2025-2026 Student Leadership Council Overview
The main mission of the EERI Student Leadership Council (SLC) is to help students develop leadership skills, interpersonal skills, and practical skills within the earthquake engineering field, primarily through organizing and hosting the undergraduate Seismic Design Competition (SDC).
SLC Member Expectations
Serving on the SLC is a volunteer leadership position greatly appreciated by the Institute, its Board, its members, and the undergraduate SDC teams. Members will have exposure and recognition throughout the competition planning process.
Members are expected to attend and actively participate in recurring planning and coordination calls from August 2025 through July 2026, as described below for each position. Additional assignments and activities are expected to take several additional hours per month, depending on each member's role and tasks.
The 2026 SDC will be in conjunction with the 13th US National Conference on Earthquake Engineering (13NCEE) and EERI Annual Meeting and will be a fully in-person experience, held at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland, Oregon from July 13-17, 2026. In-person participation for the entire duration of this event is mandatory for SLC members.
Additionally, SLC members are required to attend the SLC retreat, typically held in the California Bay Area in early August. Participation is mandatory but can be in-person or remote. In-person participation is highly encouraged to become closer to the other SLC members.
Also, SLC members must meet the following requirements:
- You must be an EERI member
- Each university is entitled to up to two members
- Be enthusiastic about advancing earthquake engineering and ready to collaborate with other SLC members

SLC Communications Committee
SLC Executive Committee
Role and Responsibilities:
The members of the SLC Executive Committee will be responsible for organizing the logistics for the SDC and overseeing other people in the SLC. They will be in direct communication with EERI organizers to ensure a smooth SDC experience.
Time Commitment: Meetings every month from August 2025 to July 2026, or more frequently if needed. Additional time requirements per role are listed below.
Co-Presidents (2)
The SLC will be led by two Co-Presidents, who are voted on during the SLC retreat. Only returning members can be considered for Co-President. As Co-Presidents, they will be the face of the SDC and lead the SLC. The Co-Presidents will:
- Ensure all SLC positions & roles get assigned or coordinate with EERI staff on how these tasks will get accomplished otherwise.
- Ensure that the SDC milestones are completed on time and that there are no significant delays. Intervene and offer support, both before and after any delays occur.
- Review and approve SLC deliverables to ensure alignment with SDC goals and vision, and compatibility of various competition components.
- Coordinate with EERI staff and prepare brief updates for the EERI staff.
- Organize and host SLC-wide meetings when needed.
- Supervise and provide support for SLC members.
- Find answers to questions from SLC members, EERI staff, and SDC participants.
- Create a schedule of tasks for each SLC member for the week of the competition.
- Make decisions about the SDC in conjunction with the other members of the executive committee and the Lead SDC Chair.
- Supervise the SDC Chairs who are in charge of these tasks:
- T shirts
- Awards Ceremony
- MC’s
- Judges
- Tour Liaison
- Printing
Time commitment: 4-6 hours per month, with the heaviest workload leading up to the SDC and at the SDC.
Treasurer (1)
The Treasurer is in charge of SLC reimbursements and sponsor relations. This position is voted on during the SLC retreat. The Treasurer will:
- Develop the budget with EERI staff and keep track of the SLC’s expenses.
- Collect and review SLC reimbursements.
- Choose restaurants and order food for the SLC during the SDC competition week.
- Work with EERI to get more sponsors and maintain current sponsors.
- Leverage their contacts/networks to generate potential sponsors.
- Supervise the SDC Chairs who are in charge of these tasks:
Time commitment: 4-6 hours per month, with the heaviest workload leading up to the SDC and at the SDC
Secretary (1)
The Secretary is in charge of SLC communications and taking notes at meetings. This position is voted on during the SLC retreat. The Secretary will:
- Take notes at all meetings.
- Create the Welcome event slides for the SDC.
- Supervise the SLC Communications committee.
- Assist the Co-Presidents as needed.
- Supervise the SLC Communications Committee:

- Webmaster
- Livestream
Time commitment: 4-6 hours per month, with the heaviest workload leading up to the SDC and at the SDC
SLC SDC Committee
Role and Responsibilities:
The SLC SDC Committee is expected to lead the technical SDC development, proposal review, and finalization of an SDC program that will achieve the SDC goals. Activities include, but are not limited to: Developing the official SDC rules, establishing rubrics for reviewing SDC products (proposals, architecture, presentations, & posters), reviewing SDC proposals and damping proposals, preliminary judging, technical judging, etc.
Time Commitment:
- Meetings once or twice a month from August 2025 - July 2026
- Complete ~60 proposal and damping proposal reviews in Winter 2025 – Spring 2026
- Additional time requirements per role are listed below.
Lead SDC Chair (1-2)
The Lead SDC Chair will oversee the SLC SDC Committee. Only returning SDC Chairs can be considered for Lead SDC Chair. They will ensure the SLC SDC Committee meets its goals by the SDC milestones and deadlines. To achieve this broad aim, they will:
- Design and host all committee meetings and discussions.
- Ensure that all SDC positions & roles get assigned – recruiting as necessary, or coordinating with staff how these tasks will get accomplished otherwise.
- Delegate, review, and coordinate work amongst the other SDC Chairs to ensure the timely creation of an engaging and informative meeting program.
- Create and monitor the submission process for SDC deliverables
- Lead and oversee SDC program design for all parts of the SDC to meet SDC goals.
- Review the final prints, websites, and products for accuracy.
Time commitment: 1-4 hours per week, with the heaviest workload during proposal and damping proposal review in Winter 2025 and Spring 2026 and leading up to the SDC and at the SDC.
Shake Table Operator (1)
The Shake Table Operator will prepare and operate the shake table on Shake Day. The Shake Table Operator must be from the University of California, Davis in order to have access to the shake table normally used by the SLC. The Shake Table Operator will:
- Maintain shake table materials, such as the shake table itself, rods, nuts, bolts, accelerometer, clamps, etc.
- Potentially acquire and prepare additional shake table materials if needed.
- Organize shipping and transportation of the shake day to the SDC.
- Assist the Lead SDC Chair.
- Operate the shake table on shake day at the SDC.
Time commitment: 1-2 hours per month, with the heaviest workload during proposal and damping proposal review in Winter 2025 and Spring 2026 and leading up to the SDC and at the SDC.
SDC Chair (8-12)
Approximately 8 to 12 members will serve as SDC Chairs. Each SDC chair will perform their committee tasks as well as have an additional role that will be determined at the SLC retreat. These roles include:
- Organize the T-shirt competition.
- Determine the T-shirt colors for the SLC and SDC participants.
- Coordinate with EERI staff and a T-shirt vendor to order the T-shirts.
- Organize the sorting of the T-shirts at the competition into different piles for each school.
- Create the award ceremony slides.
- Coordinate with the Sponsor Relations position to invite sponsors to present their designated award.
- Ensure certificate materials are bought by EERI.
- Prepare certificates.
- Coordinate with the Sponsor Relations position and EERI staff to invite sponsors to MC at Shake Day
- Create an MC schedule.
- Contact the MCs and give them instructions for what to do on Shaking Day.
- Coordinate with the Sponsor Relations position and EERI staff to get sponsors to judge for architecture, posters, and presentations.
- Create a judge schedule.
- Ensure no judges have conflicting interests with any SDC team they are judging.
- Contact the judges and give them instructions for what to do.
- Coordinate with EERI to contact sponsors and registered participants to help with MC’ing, judging, and the auction.
- Help the SLC treasurer get new sponsors for the SDC.
- Tour Liaison, Materials, and Printing (1)
- Organize the city/campus tour event.
- Coordinate with the Lead SDC chair to ensure all needed materials are ordered and hangouts are printed.
- Coordinate with EERI to find someone to assist with the livestream or assist with the livestream yourself.
- Prepare the livestream.
- Run the livestream.
- Help protect the livestream from copyright infringement.
- Submission Forms & FABI Forms (1-2)
- Work with the Lead SDC chair to create a google submission forms for judging.
- Develop a new scalable FABI calculation system to allow efficient entry and calculation of FABI scores that automatically creates scoresheets for SDC teams.
- Organize the SDC auction to help raise money for EERI and the SDC.
- Collect slides from SDC teams about their tower pitch.
- Prepare slides and materials for the auction.
- Work with EERI staff to figure out logistics for the auction.
Time commitment: 1-2 hours per week, with the heaviest workload during proposal and damping proposal review in Winter 2025 and Spring 2026, and leading up to the SDC and at the SDC
SLC Communications Committee
Role and Responsibilities:
The SLC Communications Committee is expected to communicate SLC and SDC related items to participants and the general public via social media, the SDC Discord, and the SLC website. Activities include, but are not limited to: creating and posting SDC social media posts, creating SDC article highlights for the EERI pulse, updating the SLC website, and monitoring and making announcements on the SDC discord.
Time Commitment:
- Meetings once a month from August 2025 – July 2026

Outreach Chairs (2)
The Outreach Chairs will work closely with the SLC Secretary in creating and sustaining an energetic and broad-reaching advertising and marketing campaign for the SDC utilizing social media and Discord. They will promote and share SDC news at critical milestones, such as the release of the rules, the accepted proposals, the t-shirt competition, the results, etc. The Outreach Chairs will:
- Work with SLC Secretary to refine and finalize a plan for outreach and promotion, including coordinating on social media and Discord to amplify messages and announcements.
- Write Pulse newsletter article and EERI email blast content and share with EERI staff for sending.
- Monitor and make announcements on the SDC Discord.
- Coordinate publicity needs and timelines from other SLC members.
- Create and post SLC social media posts to increase the visibility and reach of SDC.
- Support marketing efforts in other ways, as needed.
Time commitment: 2-8 hours per month, including attendance at monthly meetings
Webmaster (1)
The Webmaster will work closely with the SLC Secretary in creating and sustaining an energetic and broad-reaching advertising and marketing campaign for the SDC utilizing the SLC website.
