Articles
I. Club Name
a. University Chess Club
II. Purpose
a. To provide the University of Utah students and community the opportunity to learn about and play chess, and to provide support for chess at the University of Utah.
III. Membership
a. Any current University of Utah student, faculty, staff, alumni and friends interested in chess are qualified for membership.
b. All attendees have the right to participate in any club activity, but only members can play in chess club tournaments, and only students in the student tournament. There is no membership fee. A membership is good for one year.
c. Officers of the chess club reserve the right to refuse membership to anyone.
IV. Meetings
a. Chess club meetings will be held on a weekly basis year around as needed.
b. Regular and special meetings will be scheduled via email to each member of the chess club’s executive board.
V. Executive Board
a. The chess club’s executive board is composed of the President/Treasurer, Vice Presidents, Website Administrator, and Adviser(s). The purpose of the President/Treasurer will be to keep track of funds, equipment, enroll new members and keep track of current members, oversee other aspects (ASUU funding, tournaments, non-profit fund raising, advertising, purchasing). The Event Coordinator will be in charge of event planning and informing members of the upcoming events.
b. An unofficial officer will be appointed. The unofficial officer will replace an officer that vacates a position. A new unofficial officer will be selected. The unofficial officer is not part of the chess club’s executive board.
VI. Elections
a. Each officer is selected by majority vote of the executive board. The term of each officer is one year. There are no term limits. A new election will be held when an officer’s position becomes vacant.
b. Nominees can apply to be an officer by email to a club officer and/or an adviser at any time during the year, or at a chess club meeting.
c. Nominees will present their qualifications via email to a club officer and/or an adviser, or at a chess club meeting. An election for a new officer will be held when an officer leaves the club.
d. In the case of a run-off, the Adviser(s) decide the winner.
VII. Funds
a. The club will be funded through ASUU and from donations/gifts. All club expenditure decisions will be made by the majority vote of the club’s executive board, and the President/Treasurer will make final approval of purchases. Revenue will be given to the treasurer to put into the club account. All members of the executive board have the right to see the club accounting records.
b. Funds collected from ASUU or from donations/gifts will only be used for chess club purposes.
c. A club bank account is set up for non-profit donations. The president and Adviser (s) will be the only ones allowed to make withdrawals from the bank account. Withdrawals can only be made in the amount voted on through majority vote of the executive board.
VIII. Committees
a. There will be no committees.
IX. Affiliations
a. This club will be affiliated with the ASUU.
X. Adviser(s)
a. The selection of the Adviser(s) will be made by majority vote of the club’s executive board. Duties of the Adviser(s) include advising the club with all decisions. The Adviser(s)’ decision will break a tie vote.
XI. Amendments
a. Any member can suggest an amendment to this constitution by emailing University Chess Club officers, or suggest an amendment at a chess club meeting. The suggestion will be amended upon the majority vote of the club’s executive board.
XII. Bylaws
a. The procedures for the inclusion of any rules or regulations specific to the chess club will be to email suggestion(s) to University Chess Club, or make suggestion(s) at a chess club meeting. The suggestion(s) will be included upon the majority vote of the chess club’s executive board.

1st Amendment:
A. Selecting University Chess Club Team Player(s) for Events
To be selected to play for the University Chess Club (UCC) at University of Utah team(s) during Utah State Team tournaments, Utah and other regional Intercollegiate Tournaments, Online Internet Collegiate Team Tournaments, matches with other clubs, and other tournaments, University of Utah (U of U) students and others need to be Team Players. The following is considered for a player to be on any UCC team:
a. Attitude of the player:
1. Player gets along with other team players and are chosen by these players to be on a team,
2. Player is willing to help his/her teammates, and others during Chess Club meetings
3. Player is dependable for team event(s)
4. Player is on good standing with the Chess club
B. In the selection process for U of U student PanAmerican Intercollegiate Team, because PanAmerican Tournaments & trips are demanding, more is needed from student players. The Student Board and advisers looks, in addition to section A. a. above player team qualities, at players that supported, helped (not hurt), and contributed to the team & club. Plus, are committed to going to the PanAmerican and performed well all year round to represent the University Chess Club (UCC) at U of U for this prestigious tournament.
a. Additional factors in the PanAmerican team selection process of players are:
helping Chess Club operations, coming to and significantly contributing to the Chess Club during the fall, spring and summer when a player can, participation and experience playing on U of U Team(s), being and contributing as a Chess Club officer, actual playing strength of player relative to player's USCF rating (player can be unrated), helping to get funding for the club and it's team(s), works well with UCC Advisers, willing to share the cost of team’s PanAmerican tournament expenses, helping the PanAmerican team with planning & logistics, flexible, not making excessive demands & requests from other players and UCC Advisors, community service performed that benefited the club & the community, and providing other needed help.
b. The Club's PanAmerican Team is decided by majority vote of the student Board of Directors.

2nd Amendment:
Line III c. To the original chess club constitution is amended to say that non-student visitors to the chess club may not be allowed to come to the University Chess Club meetings or is to be totally banned from coming to the club if determined by a majority of student board of directors with an advisor having a tie-break vote if needed.
