Food, Sunsets, & Nightlife Notes:

  • Recommendations for nightlife:
  • Alquimico - One of the top 50 bars in the world! Great cocktails and fun atmosphere
  • La Jugada - right across the street from Alquimico. Similar atmosphere, fun spot
  • El Pasquin de Joaco - Nice club just inside the clocktower, around the corner from Alquimico with different floors and ambiances
  • La Movida - fancy club in the walled city, known for an upscale experience and electronic music (though depending on the DJ, there is often a mix of Latin and crossover). There is a dress code that they are strict about, so look your best (no flip flops. I recommend nice pants, skirts, dresses, nice sandals). Check out their insta if you want to see examples (or ask me)
  • Neutro - Fairly new reggaeton bar in Getsemani. Great music and good atmosphere.
  • Mondo Exocita - our favorite cocktail bar--best cocktails in the city! The staff are great. Our go-to for top quality cocktails.
  • Recommendations for rooftops and terraces for sunset drinks and snacks:
  • Hotel Movich - best view of the city at sunset, period.
  • Townhouse - cute brunch spot and sunset spot
  • Mirador Gastrobar - another great rooftop with a view. The head bartender has really put his heart and soul into expanding the food and drink menu in the last few years. They have collaborations with local fruit producers and have some really unique drinks on the menu you won’t find elsewhere in the city.
  • El Baron - located in the plaza outside Pedro San Claver church in the walled city. They have outdoor seating in an open plaza that is beautiful at night or in the early evening.
  • Casual spots
  • La Terraza Principal - located in Getsemani along the bay. They have food truck style bites with a central bar in the middle that serves cocktails and beer. You can sit where you like along the bay, beautiful at sunset.
  • La Calle Angosto - located in Getsemani close to La Plaza Trinidad. A street that locals live on who put out plastic tables and chairs starting in the afternoon and into the night. They make drinks and light food options from their houses. You will see locals playing dominos or cards nearly every day, mixed in with tourists. It’s a unique, fun atmosphere. Use this link to find it on the map.
  • Plaza Trinidad - open plaza where locals and tourists hang out. Great location for late night food after a fun night out. Also a great spot for getting street coffee in the morning from a cafetero, or visit Angie’s juice stand (she sets up on the corder facing the church) and she can make juice out of any fruit to your liking with your preferred amount of sugar. She can also tell you about the fruits if you see something unfamiliar or have questions.
  • Salsa bars - If your group likes salsa, bachata, merengue, you can check out Vueltabajero, Havana, La Tertulia, or La Caponera. They are on the more casual side and all located close to one another in Getsemani.
  • Other casual bars in Getsemani include Calle Adentro and Casa Palenque. We have a friend who leads pub crawls that include these spots (among others) if you’re looking for that type of atmosphere. It’s a way to meet other tourists in a group, but it’s not everyone’s scene if you’re looking for a more chill evening at your own pace.
  • Restaurants
  • El Muelle - best local food in Cartagena. Located on a beach in Bocagrande. Not fancy, but still nice, and a great spot to get drinks and watch the sunset before dinner. Known for their seafood, prepared by local folks who live on the island next to Bocagrande.
  • Niku - Asian fusion, located in the walled city. Beautiful location, often with a live DJ or live entertainment. Their food is beyond, with combinations I haven't seen anywhere else in the city
  • Cuzco - Peruvian restaurant in the walled city. Atmosphere similar to Niku, colonial architecture. Their ceviche is incredible. Cartagena isn't known for their steak, but I've had good beef dishes here too.
  • Mistura - another good spot in the walled city, great seafood
  • Marea - located in the Cartagena bay overlooking the water. Great food in a really beautiful setting
  • Buena Vida Marisqueria - in the walled city, nice place, great seafood
  • Carmen - really incredible food, fine dining. Pricey, but worth it.
  • Celele - small fine dining restaurant. Best to make reservations in advance if you can.
