Things that have changed since Fall 2012
Please add any things that have changed about Columbia/Ourselves/The Neighborhood since our first year. The goal is to inject everyone with a healthy dose of nostalgia!
Things That Cost Less
- Tuition was $5,000 less
- The price of Koronet pizza was $3.75 a slice
- Subway fare was $2.25 (I thought it was $2.15)
- laundry wasn’t (seemingly) free (now we pay for it as part of tuition)
- $1 beers @ Lions Head on Wednesdays << what is it now? $2 :( :(
- Barnard’s Kosher meal plan was more expensive than regular meal plan
- Metro fare went up by 0.25 … twice
- Milano’s card minimum was $8 (so you weren’t forced to get gum just to buy your salad)
- Free tampons/pads
- Emergency Meal Fund
- Chipotle was $7
- (Aren’t Absolute Bagels more expensive now?)
Stores/Places That No Longer Exist
- Cardo-Mat, where no one ever went was replaced by Dig Inn
- Some people actually went there!
- Never even heard of Cardo-Mat
- Ollie’s exploded. (And thus concluding the Ollie-Vine/Triad-Yakuza war for Morningside Heights)
- Sweetgreen replaced Uni-Cafe
- Friedman’s replaced Haakon’s
- O’Connel’s became Tara Hill Bar and Grill (and yet will forever become known as Cannon’s)
- Arts and Crafts replaced Camille’s
- Citibank burned down, briefly taking The Heights with it, and then the 112th branch opened on the other side of broadway, replacing Village Copier
- Ricky’s closed down
- The ‘dam came and went
- Barnard Library was still standing RIP
- Barnard gymnasium (and library) existed
- Barnard pool was open
- Archery Club had a place to practice [see Barnard gym]
- Il Cibreo became Amigos
- Havana Central became Bernheim
- Camilles was a thing and reputed mob front
- Totally a mob front. 20 years open and no customers??
- Butler and Lerner Second Floor computer labs used to exist
- But the “computer lab” has become a lounge with 3 computers
- VIllage Pourhouse became Amity Hall
- Maoz became Pressed Juicery
- vareli and/or domain switched names 5 times then shut down
- Toast Chicken became some weird Mexican-themed thing
- Columbia Cottage
- No Insomnia cookies
- What was before pita grill?
- Golden Nails
- Tom’s didn’t have street seating
- Young’s Fish Market
- No ugly condo building next to SJD
- The old-new South Ferry Station--and when 1 trains terminated at Rector Street
- Low Library
Practices/Rituals/Institutions That Have Changed
- there were two entrances to EC!!!!!!
- Where was the second one?

- Lysistrata was the dirtiest book in Lit Him, that’s so sad.
- Wilma was still at John Jay
- Lion used to be somewhat relevant
- Havana central had great empanadas, Amir’s had the best coffee
- Empanada Wednesday! They sold them outside for $2 or $3 each
- you could petition global core
- gender-based misconduct policy, university rules have been revised for better or for worse
- CrackDel used to sell 4Loko, then it lost and regained its liquor license (m2m has them now)
- New York Times newspapers used to be in Lerner (now they’re in John Jay)
- they moved them to the piano lounge because people on tours were taking them all
- Now free online subscriptions!
- No sexual respect initiative
- bacchanal didn’t suck
- No tickets, wristbands, CUID check
- #Make Bacchanal great again
- ZBT, SAE and Psi U still existed
- Gamma Phi and AOII didn’t exist yet
- ZBT’s come back!

- Our Football team hadn’t won a game
- Subs conscious stopped being good
- We used to turn the tooth in front of Law (do people still do that?yes)
- BWOG had a decent web design
- Registration is different
- Yea, before there was no wishlist, so you had to watch your computer 24/7 to wait for an open spot
- Could also give class spots to friends. Upperclassmen would register for additional classes and give them to their underclassmen friends.
- COOP stuff
- Ricoh (package center) became Swiss Post Solutions
- Package center wait time went way up
- JJ’s place is open over break
- CPS has more appointments
- $15 minimum wage for work study
- Dodge got all new equipment, weights and machines
- And it took all of five minutes to wreck that shit
- Spec comments sections were a bit less shitty/had less MRAs/were more active

- Barnard had a much much cheaper printing center for all student orgs.

- Before you had to buy everything at the lerner ramps with cash. Now cookies/showcase tickets can be bought with Venmo!
- Frisbee team takes credit for starting the trend you're welcome

- I don’t remember a world without tinder
- SEAS classes are now on Canvas
- There’s hordes of Chinese food carts

Collective Psyche
- I am still a freshman at heart!
- very little campus organizing/activism as opposed to now
- We still had hope
- This would affect me more if I weren’t so emotionally hardened
- We still had time to chill and party and make new friends

Things that are Now off-limits
- The Hamilton and Math Tunnels got locked down

- Entrance to Lerner roof from 8th floor was unlocked
- Kent attic was open
- More beer cans on Mudd Roof
- You could go on the Claremont Roof without being seen by big brother
- WE USED TO HAVE THE LERNER BOARD ROOMS ON THE 5th floor T.T
- I could actually use the Barnard tunnels for the purpose for which they were designed
- Uris library (Watson) stopped letting in undergrads during midterms and finals
- That bathroom in Schermerhorn was permanently locked after CU realized that it was a cruising location for unaffiliated gay men (I swear to god if I dreamt this, I will be so sad) (online sources say it was the 7th floor bathroom) lol
- Schermerhorn roof used to be accessible, there was a greenhouse up there but now the door is always locked
Places that are different but not gone (mainly dining/renovations)
- Wallach became a hotel. <<<is this true?<< it got renovated so it it looks fancy
- so did mcbain, EC, schapiro, and a few others
- New Ferris staircase
- Ferris pasta station had only 3 burners not 6
- Ferris pasta people were still just as unfriendly tho
- (Many floors of) John Jay were renovated <<<including the dining hall
- Printers were added to John Jay
- Butler Cafe got revamped
- no dumb virtual maps of campus near the 115th entrance, just printed ones
- BARNARD STUDENTS COULD SWIPE INTO JJ’S
- John Jay wasn’t renovated
- And there was pizza with the twisted rope crust (my favorite had jalapenos).
- Cafe East now sells mangos, grapes/cheese
- Carman renovations
- Carleton Lounge’s buffet and sub sandwich station got replaced by the sucky, more expensive Blue Java.
- Butler caf started selling fancy(?) overpriced cake things
- also they now sell packaged ramen and large packages of rice cakes
- Amir’s started serving beer (lol)
- Carman Lounge now looks like the Rain Forest Cafe (and McBain Lobby)
- John Jay is open for dinner until 9 pm and JJs is open every night until 1 am -- even the weekend nights
- John Jay has sushi DAILY (R.I.P. Jay pizza)
- There did not used to be a bathroom on the bottom floor of Jay (everyone used the 5th floor bathroom to vom...which is where I lived </3)
- The football stadium/outdoor track at Baker field did not have the Christie complex
- there were no *breakfast swipes* (read: poptarts) at JJs
- Jay used to have only one questionable salad bar, now there are several
- Meatless Monday’s has taken full force at campus dining halls
- a heinous crime
- Forreal i just want bacon on mondays at john jay
- Lerner ramps: Uncomfortable benches replaced with uncomfortable chairs+tables
- Subsconscious had a much bigger menu; a much better chip selection; much tastier sandwiches; and wasn’t planning on installing seating (talked to someone who works there and they confirmed the seating thing)
- Ham Del didn’t have those baller sesame rolls they use now (or did they?)
No Clue/Misc

- McBain was a rat’s nest that smelled like a cat litter box. Now it’s a hotel that smells like a cat litter box.
