FILL IN THE BLANKS - HEADTEACHER EMAIL TEMPLATE

SUBJECT LINE: Introduce mandatory KS3 teaching of the British Empire on the National Curriculum

Dear Mrs Edwards,

My name is <<YOUR FULL NAME>> and I am emailing today to urge you to support the introduction of mandatory KS3 teaching of the British Empire on the National Curriculum.

I support the campaign, Fill in the Blanks, led by sixth form students from South London, all of whom have family from former British colonies.

We cannot understand Britain today without critically acknowledging our colonial legacy. In order to enable the future citizens of this country to tackle systemic racism, brought to the forefront by COVID-19 and the Black Lives Matter protests in the UK, we need to Fill in the Blanks of our history. This starts with teaching the history of the British Empire.

Currently, students across the UK can go through their entire compulsory education without learning about the British Empire. The Government argues schools "have the freedom & flexibility [...] to teach pupils about the history of Britain and the wider world. This can include the topic of the British Empire.”  Schools shouldn’t have the option to ignore pivotal moments in British history. I am demanding that the government mandates the teaching of British colonial history in KS3.

By implementing this curriculum change, British society will have a chance to take accountability for the atrocities performed by, and in the name of, the Empire and ensure they can be avoided as Britain forms its post-Brexit identity.

  1. Will you publicly support the campaign of Fill In The Blanks?
  2. Will you make a commitment to teaching the British Empire in KS3 history?

I look forward to hearing your response in due course.

Yours sincerely,
