Tool Library Coordinator

The Green Lents Community Tool Library is a free resource for residents in outer SE Portland. It functions like a book library, except tools or other project materials are checked out instead. We promote access over ownership, and encourage a culture of repair and creative reuse to reduce waste and consumption. We are working to safely reopen this vital service during this COVID-19 crisis and are seeking someone with the knowledge and expertise necessary to help us coordinate this effort. We'll be utilizing the library to help distribute gardening and mutual aid supplies during this time (seeds, starts, soil, masks, sanitizer, etc.)

Summary of Primary Job Functions:

The Tool Library Coordinator is primarily responsible for coordinating all aspects of the volunteer

program including recruiting, training, retaining, and general managing of volunteers. The Tool Library Coordinator is also available to answer general inquiries and to perform other tasks as specified by, and in collaboration with, the Tool Library team and Green Lents staff.  

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Compensation: Paid position at ~$1,000/month, approx. $20/hr

Hours: ~50 hours per month (~0.25 FTE)

Duration: 3 months, with possibility to extend based on performance and funding

Start date: ASAP - Ideally available by June 1

Basic Responsibilities:

  • coordinate inventory, including soliciting donations, collecting, and distributing
  • Schedule volunteers for shifts at the library, ensuring at least two volunteers present for each shift. Covering shifts if needed.
  • Build and sustain relationships with partners, particularly PDX CAN and other community organizations
  • Perform weekly shift during open hours at the Tool Library (currently 1x per week, Sat 10am-1pm with the possibility of opening Wednesday evenings 6-8pm in the future)
  • Support sanitization and quarantine procedures necessary to operation the Tool Library safely.
  • Host tool repair work parties and cleaning days as needed.
  • Participate in staff meetings and Tool Library Keyholder meetings as needed
  • Recruit and train new  volunteers, including calling potential volunteers who have expressed interest.
  • Track volunteer hours.
  • Manage Facebook and Tool Library “Librarian” email account to ensure prompt response to inquiries.
