Course Description

This course presents the origins and formations of the social, economic and political space of Argentina and introduces the learning of the regional cultures, frequently excluded when one thinks of Argentina and what is normally reduced to just Buenos Aires. The course reflects not only on the process of conformation of the national identity but also of the Hispanic-indigenous culture and the criollo culture. The emblematic figure of the gaucho, the folklore, the tradition of mate and the traditional movements of the Argentine countryside are studied in detail. Immigration and its influence on the national identity and its enrichment in the panorama of art, literature, dance and music is also studied. Another case is urban identities: the class will study the case of Buenos Aires and what it’s “porteñidad” consists of. And finally, the class will discuss the role that tango plays as a symbol of the passion of the Rio de la Plata region. The student will learn the traditions and culture of the different cultural environments of Argentina and will acquire an understanding of daily life, the beliefs, legends, myths, work, family, love, health, dances of different ethnic groups in the past and present of the urban and rural societies. The student will learn the cosmovision of the different cultural groups in an anthropological context and will acquire episystemic notions and of research topics of their choosing.
