NEWSPAPER PRESS FUND RECORD

2,300 Guineas for a Barrie Manuscript

The Prime Minister and Sir James Barrie were the principal guests at the annual dinner of the Newspaper Press Fund at the May Fair [sic] Hotel last night.

Major Astor, who presided, announced a gift of £10,000 to the fund.

Sir Herbert Morgan auctioned the original manuscript of Sir James Barrie’s “The Twelve Pound Look,” which was finally sold for 2,300 guineas to Mr. Gabriel Wells.

A blank canvas presented by Mr. Philip de Laszlo, on which he offered to paint a portrait of the purchaser or his nominee, was knocked down to the Hon. Peter Larkin, High Commissioner for Canada, for 1,100 guineas [6007].

Mr. S. G. Smeed, secretary of the fund, announced that, without considering donations from guests at the dinner, the appeal had realised £27,000, an absolute record for the fund.

It was also announced that the Stock Exchange Mutual Subscription Fund in connection with the Derby had increased their donation to 1,000 guineas.
