16th July, 1930.

Dear Mr. Riley,

It was an exceptional pleasure to me to receive your very kind letter,[1] for which please accept my warmest thanks.

I am very pleased to let you know that our son is now on the way to complete recovery, and we are indeed grateful that he had such a miraculous escape. Of course it will always be a matter of great sadness to him to have lost in such circumstances one of his best, as also ours, friends with whom he studies and graduated at Oxford.[2]

It interested me very much to learn that you were a friend of the the late Presidents of the R.B.A., Sir Alfred East,[3] whom I very highly esteemed as a friend also and an artist, and it is great satisfaction to me to hear that I have your full support  and sympathy in my best endeavours as President of the Society. My one desire is that the Council and Members to realise that I am trying to do my utmost for the interest of this ancient institution.

I do hope you will be taking part in the forthcoming Water-Colour Exhibition, and will also be sending one of your best works for the coming Winter Exhibition.

With my renewed thanks, | Believe me. | Yours sincerely,
