Where do we put our equal sign?

  1. Display and say two addition sentences, one with and one without an equal sign.
  2. Have volunteers circle what is different about the second addition sentence.
  3. Ask children what they think the sign means.
  4. Distribute math mats to each child.
  5. (1 ocean animal , plus sign, 2 ocean animals) to show an addition expression.
  6. The teacher will say the the addition expression aloud.
  7. Point out that 3 is the sum.
  8. The teacher will say an addition sentence.
  9. Have a child write the addition sentence and solve it.
