George Floyd

If you are not familiar with George Floyd’s story, he was killed by four police officers on May 25th. He was choked to death due to the force of one officer’s pressure to his throat. Floyd never resisted arrest at any point and was unarmed. To help bring justice for Floyd by getting Minneapolis official’s to lock his killer and the accomplices up with a higher degree than he is currently being charged for.

Breonna Taylor

Breonna Taylor was a 26 year old EMT in Louisville Kentucky. She was killed when police officers in unmarked cars in unmarked clothing entered Breonna’s home without knocking or announcing themselves. The officers claimed that they were looking for a suspect for drug related crimes, but this suspect had already been apprehended.

Ahmaud Arbery

Ahmaud was just 25 years old when he was chased by armed white residents of South Georgia and killed. Upon his death, Ahmaud Arbery was simply out for a run. The men responsible for his death wrongly assumed Ahmaud was responsible for recent break-ins and attacked him. His killers were not arrested for months following his death until his story began to spread in the media. Georgia does not have a hate crime statute.

Regis Korchinski

Regis Korchinski was a 29 year old woman in Toronto, Canada. Police officers arrived at her apartment complex on a call about a mental health crisis on May 27th. The officers asked Korchinski to go into a washroom inside her apartment with them and kept her brother and mother from entering. The mother states that she heard Korchinski asking for her help before she fell to her death. Her family has reason to believe that police had some involvement in her untimely death.

Tony McDade

Tony McDade was a trans black man who was murdered in Florida. He has been misgendered several times in media reports. He was killed on May 27th and was only 38. Tony McDade was killed by a police officer after he acted in self defense against a group of men who had beaten him. He was killed outside his apartment complex. Many residents of this complex have stated that he was unarmed.

Sean Reed

Sean Reed killed by police officers on May 6th, 2020. He was a veteran who suffered from PTSD that was killed in Indianapolis following a high speed chase. Sean Reed live streamed the entire situation on Facebook, but following his death police officers attempted to get rid of this footage. Sean Reed was shot at as many as 15 times. He was shot at even after he had fallen to the ground. After his passing, officers and other people off camera could be heard saying things such as “That’s going to be a closed casket honey”. His killer was only put on “administrative leave”.

Dion Johnson

Dion Johnson was a 28 man that was shot and killed by a DPS trooper on May 25th in Phoenix Arizona. Police claim that Johnson was in a vehicle parked in such a way that partially blocked traffic. Johnson was asleep in the driver’s seat when there was an alleged struggle when the trooper made contact with him and the trooper killed Johnson.

Julius Jones

Julius Jones requires our action, and quickly. Currently he is on death row in the state of Oklahoma. There remains compelling evidence, however, that Julius Jones has been wrongfully convicted as he did not fit an eyewitness description of the shooter, his co-defendant (who has now been freed) did. Even more, during his trial and his arrest Jones was called racial slurs by both police officers and jurors. His case is ridden with racial discrimination and he can not die as an innocent man.

Jamarion Robinson

Jamarion Robinson was killed by a police officer in the year 2016. In total Robinson, an innocent man, had 76 bullet wounds in all. He was in his girlfriend’s apartment when her door was opened. The bullets on Jamarion Robinson’s hands show his hands were up when the officers entered. The officer responsible for his death was quickly cleared of any wrongdoing and officers have prevented the County District Attorney from receiving the full information regarding Robinson’s case. The family still has yet to hear the truth about their son’s story as body cameras were disabled.

David McAtee

David McAtee was fatally shot by a Louisville police officer a week ago. He was a business owner in the West End of Louisville. One of the officers responsible for his death was called out for taunting protesters in Louisville saying she hoped a pepper ball had hurt a pictured protestor. When she, another officer, and the National Guard reportedly fired at and killed McAtee had no body camera footage at the time of McAtee’s death.

Emerald Black

On June 7, 2019, Emerald Black was on her way home from a hospital visit when she was stopped by San Leandro police. While at the hospital, Black had just learned she was high-risk for having a miscarriage and was still in hospital clothing when her fiance (who was driving) was pulled over for bad registration tags. In her lawsuit filed against San Leandro police on May 25th, she stated that the officers took her from the car “stomped on her stomach, piled on top of her, and arrested her” (Black’s Lawsuit). This resulted in the loss of her child and several other physical injuries. A footprint was visible on her clothing.

Shali Tilson

Shali Tilson was only 22 years old when he died of dehydration on March 12, 2018 when he was improperly locked in solitary confinement for nine days without food or water. The family has filed a lawsuit against the Rockdale County Sheriff and demanded that the sheriff step down. There is video footage of Tilson begging for help inside the cell, as he knew he was dying. Tilson’s story is a vile example of the reform needed in our prisons as well. Despite his sentence, Shali Tilson and all prisoners are still human. Statistically we have been shown time and time again cruelty and punishment do not reform people, it only raises recidivism rates. We need rehabilitation and just treatment for our prisoners, and we need it now.

James Scurlock

James Scurlock was a black protester that was killed by an Omaha bar owner. He was only 22 when he was killed by Jacob Gardner, who has since been released from custody. After Gardner had fired two shots into “scuffle” during protests following the death of George Floyd, he was tackled by Scurlok. Gardner then fired his gun again, killing Scurlock. Gardner at the time of the protest had a concealed carry weapon permit but at the time of the shooting it had expired. Scurlock’s family has called for the prosecution of Gardner after the prosecutor, Don Kleine, decided not to. The State Senator has openly disagreed with this choice, saying “In this community, we prosecute black and brown individuals a lot more for things like we just watched”.

Darnell Chaffin

Darnell Chaffin was wrongly accused for robbery in Cooks County Illinois. He was proven to be guilty, by the victim of said robbery himself. However, he was still sentenced. He is still in jail. He has six kids and deserves justice.

 Jahsean Hodge

Jahsean was only 21 years old when he was shot by officers in the back three times. Before his untimely death, Jahsean was babysitting his niece, who during an attempted robbery before Jahsean died, was also killed. Jahsean was killed when he pursued the killer of his niece. Injured, bleeding, and running multiple people in the area called the police on him and before anything, once police arrived on the scene they opened fire immediately. The family is seeking donations to help bury Jahsean, a private investigator for his case, and for his two young daughters and have yet to reach their goal.

Said Joquin

Said Joquin was only 26 years old when he was fatally shot by police in Lakewood, Washington. Said Joquin was pulled over by a police officer on May 1, 2020. The officer who pulled Joquin over then went on to call for back-up, but as more and more officers were arriving at the scene, the offer had shot Joquin. Investigators state the do not know why Joquin was pulled over or why the officer shot. The officer has only been put on paid administrative leave.

Jamarion Robinson

AJ Weber

AJ Weber was only a teenager when he was killed by an Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department deputy. Police avidly avoided questions from Weber’s father concerning his death. Deputies had responded to a call about a young man pointing a gun at someone on a motorcycle and believed it was Weber. As Weber ran, upon turning around once he was shot over ten times. Weber was unarmed. The officers refused to seek medical assistance for Weber and witnesses say that Weber was still alive and breathing after being shot. However, they have also stated that when neighbors called for medical assistance, the police turned them away.    The department has repeatedly refused to comment on Weber’s investigation.

Ty’Rese West

Tyrese West was killed by police officers on June 15, 2019. He was stopped for riding his bike without headlights. No law enforcement officials have claimed that he was armed or fired at police, and it remains unclear if the officer involved was wearing a body cam, as it is only encouraged at the Mount Pleasant PD. The officer claimed he was using life saving measures when he fatally shot Tyrese West twice in the head.

Mike Ramos

Mike Ramos was killed by officers when they responded to a 911 call about two people allegedly doing drugs in a car and a man in said car allegedly waving a gun in the air. They claim that when they asked the man to step out of the car, he did, but “did not comply with the.. Commands”. They state that they fired a non-lethal shot at the suspect, but after Ramos went back into his car and drove out the parking space, the officers fired a lethal gunshot that killed Ramos. Ramos repeatedly told the officer’s he did not have a gun, and indeed, he was unarmed.

Victim’s Stories

Tony Robinson

Tony Robinson was only 19 years old when he was killed by a Wisconsin police officer on March 6, 2015. Robinson was unarmed during the altercation. The officer was called to the scene after reports that Robinson had been running in and out of the street, jumping in front of cars and behaving erratically. Some believe drug use might have been responsible for his erratic behavior. The officer that was responsible for Robinson’s death was also responsible for the death of a black man named Ronald Brandon on his front porch for holding a pellet gun. He never faced charges.

Nate Woods

Nate Woods was a 43 year old man executed on March 5th, 2020 for his alleged role in the murder of three police officers. Ten minutes before he was scheduled to be killed a sister of one of the police officers that passed away begged the chief of staff to the governor of Alabama to spare his life because he “didn’t kill my brother, and he didn’t kill the other officers” (USA Today). The Supreme Court chose not to intervene with his execution. His case gained a lot of attention due to the fact the police’s evidence against Nate Woods was flimsy and he had poor representation in his trial. The confessed shooter in this incident Kerry Spencer later said Wood was “100% innocent” in the case.

Yassin Mohamed

Yassin Mohamed was 47 years old when he was killed by the sheriff’s deputy in the state of Georgia on May 9, 2020 near the town of Claxton. Police were called to the scene after receiving reports of a man (Yassin Mohamed) walking in the middle of the road. Investigators have said that when Mohamed began to throw stones, hit a deputy once, then went to pick up another deputy then shot and killed Yassin. The deputy hit with the stone was not seriously injured.

Kendric McDade

Kendrec McDade was killed in Pasadena on March 12th of 2012 in Pasadena California by two police officers. He was unarmed. A lot of his case has been unreported by police officers and largely tried to be swept away from the public. His mother has stated that all this wants “the truth” from these officers. The police believed that McDade had something to do with a theft that had occurred around the same time McDade was on the street, however a significant detail is that police officer went out of their way to not put on their emergency lights or sirens- an act that would’ve activated the in-car video camera during the situation. The officers stated they believe McDade was armed and they feared for their lives but not once did they ever call for back-up or even tell McDade to stop using the loudspeaker. The officers were allowed to go back to work two days after McDade’s death.

Laquan McDonald

Laquan McDonald was only 17 years old when he was shot by a Chicago police officer. The officer was only sentenced to 6 years in prison, but ended up serving less. Laquan McDonald was shot 16 times on October 20, 2014. Journalist Brandon Smith requested for the CPD to release videos of that night on May 26, 2015 but on August 4 of that year they denied. On Nov. 24 2015 McDonald’s killer was charged with first-degree murder after the Cook County judge ordered the city to release the video. His killer was suspended without pay but then hired as a janitor by the city’s police union. His killer was sentenced to only 7 years in prison byt only served for 3 and ½.

Botham Jean

Botham Jean was killed in his own apartment by a police officer who claimed that she mistook his apartment for hers as Jean’s apartment was one floor below hers. He was only 27 years old. Footage of his killer prior to entering Jean’s apartment was released. In this video she was seen, still in uniform, talking on her phone as she paced back and forth outside Jean’s apartment. Witnesses also reported they heard the officer pouding on Jean’s door to be let in. Others also report that it would’ve been very unlikely for Jean to leave his door open like the officer claimed. Following the incident, when she called 911 she told the dispatcher not only did she mistake the apartment, she was also worried about losing her job. She was sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Nina Pop

Nina Pop was a black trans woman who was stabbed to death in Missouri. There have been no arrests regarding her case at this time. In the past four weeks prior to her death, five other trans women of color had died. Nina Pop’s story needs to be remembered because of the blatant epidemic in this country of the killing of not just trans women, but especially trans women of color in America. No one deserves to die for who they are. To the LGBTQ+ community: never forget the Stonewall Riots for our rights began with Marsha P. Johnson, a black trans woman. We must protect and stand with our trans brothers and sisters.

George Stinny Jr.

George Stinney Jr. was convicted at only 14 years old. Seventy years after his execution, he was exonerated. He was charged with the murder of two girls in 1944 in the Jim Crow South. His sister stated “[the police] were looking for someone to blame it on, so they used my brother as a scapegoat”. When he was questioned, he didn’t have any representation (a law that didn’t get put in place until 1963). There was no evidence against him, only a coerced confession.

Jeremy McDole

Jeremy McDole was a 28 years old black man who was killed on September 23, 2015 in Wilmington, Delaware. McDole was paraplegic, meaning he had an impairment in motor or sensory function. At the time of his death he was in his wheelchair. The exact cause of his death is still unsure. Police were called about a man who had suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound. When they arrived they found Jeremy McDole in his wheelchair. When they instructed McDole to raise his hands, he was killed. Whether or not McDole was armed is debated by the officers and his family.

Trayvon Martin

In 2012 Trayvon Martin was walking home from a trip to a convenience store when he was fatally shot by George Zimmerman, a volunteer for the neighborhood watch. The police chose not to even arrest Zimmerman following Martin’s death, for he claimed it was in self-defense. Trayvon Martin’s death sparked conversation about self-defense laws and the consequences of racial profiling. Zimmerman was found not guilty for second-degree murtder in July of 2013.

Stephon Clark

Stephon Clark was an unarmed black man living in Sacramento that was killed in his backyard after police claimed his cell phone looked like a gun. The officer’s fired 8 times, but Clark was shot 6 times in the back, which was revealed by a private autopsy paid for by the defense attorney. He was wrongfully killed on March 18, 2018. Body cam footage proved that Clark had indeed approached officers with his hands out. The officers also turned off their microphones minutes after the shooting.

Rekia Boyd

Rekia Boyd was only 22 years old when she was killed by a Chicago police officer in 2012. The officer had arrived at a park about a noise complaint, and after a verbal altercation, the officer shot a man named Antonio Cross and killed Rekia Boyd. The department tried to claim that Cross had approached the officer with a gun, but the family stated it was instead a cell phone and no weapon was ever found at the scene. Witnesses also stated that the officer appeared to be drunk when he arrived. The officer was charged with involuntary manslaughter, but his charges were soon cleared and he resigned from the CPD.

Tamir Rice

Tamir Rice was only 12 years old when he was fatally shot by an officer in Cleveland in 2015. At the time Rice was playing airsoft gun that fired plastic pellets. When one officer called a Code 1, the highest level of urgency, and within two seconds of another officer arriving, Tamir was shot. This raised doubts over what police had claimed, the idea that they had warned Tamir to raise his hand three times. When Rice’s sister, only 14, ran up minutes later she was tackled and put in handcuffs by the officers. When their mother arrived, they also threatened to arrest her as well when she was reasonably in distress if she did not calm down.

Malik Williams

Malik Williams was only twenty three years old when he was fatally shot by Washington police on Dec. 31, 2019. Malik Williams was a paralegic man, meaning that he had an impairment in his motor/sensory functions. The officers, however, claim they didn’t know this information until after the shooting when they found his wheelchair in the backseat of his car. He was killed while sitting in his car, where 84 shell casings were found.

Rodney King

Rodney King was a young black man who was brutally attacked by Los Angeles police officers who were acquitted, despite the entire situation being caught on film and broadcasted into homes nationwide and worldwide. He was beaten for fifteen minutes and more than a dozen cops stood by watching and commenting. King suffered several severe injuries and permanent brain damage. This resulted in five days of riots in Los Angeles and ignited a national conversation about racial and economic disparity and police use of force that continues today.

Aiyana Stanley Jones

Aiyanna Stanley Jones was just seven years old when she was killed while sleeping. A Detroit officer killed her in May of 2010. Juries failed twice for the officer that was responsible for Jones’s death. Aiyana was killed as she slept on a sofa inside her home as her home was the target of a midnight Swat-style operation to arrest her uncle. Her uncle lived in the apartment upstairs and was the primary suspect of a murder investigation. Before she was killed, officers threw a flashbang grenade (designed to disorient people with a blinding flash and temporarily deafening noise) which caused Jones’s blanket to catch fire. Following Aiyana’s death her grandmother was arrested, and though she was released it was not before “she and two other family members - Aiyana’s parents - had been forced to sit where their own child had died for hours” (The Guardian).

Atatiana Jefferson

Atatiana Jefferson was killed by a police officer in Fort Worth Texas. She was only 28 years old and was a pre-med graduate student. Jefferson was killed following the officer responding to an early-morning house call from a concerned neighbor. Jefferson had been babysitting her 8 year old nephew. Before firing, the officer failed to identify himself.

Central Park 5

The Central Park 5 were five black and Latino teenagers that were convicted for the brutal assault of a 28 year old investment banker named Trisha Meili on April 20, 1989. The men were named Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson, Yusef Salaam (15), Raymond Santana (14), and Korey Wise (16). In 2002, new DNA evidence along and a confession proved that a man named Matias Reyes was the only culprit. This case has become a major illustration of the racial disparity and inequalities in the criminal justice system.

Adrian Williams

Adrian Williams was killed following a chase on April 21, 2014 in Pittsburgh. Williams was shot six times by officer Christopher Kertis. Williams was hit twice in the back of the shoulder, under his left arm, under and through his right arm, and on his lower back. The chase began when three men in an SUV ran a stop sign. There is suspiciously no car video of the chase shows no sign of the shooting that took place.

Johnathan Ferrell

Johnathan Ferrell was a Florida A&M University football player that was killed by a police officer in North Carolina on September 14, 2013. Ferrell was unarmed when he was shot 10 times. Ferrell was killed after he was in a car accident and had gone to a nearby house and asked for help. The resident of said house then called the police who claimed they shot Ferrell in self-defense because he was acting “erratic”. Of the officers with Ferrell’s killer, he was the only one who fired his gun. One of the officers at the scene did use his taser.
