Dear Marczi,

I am impatiently waiting for a letter from you, I have been here for two weeks now and I have not heard from you – I’m wondering how you are – I hope you aren’t suffering from rheumatism. Unfortunately I don’t have the address of your Munich banker to hand – send it to me as soon as possible because I cannot make any arrangements [without it] – As I feared – Margit’s husband, if you can imagine, managed to get here somehow and sent in a letter from his wife. I immediately made arrangements not to have anyone let into the Palace without my knowledge. Just imagine, he put it about – that he was related to me – and since then letters from Hungarians keep arriving. Frightful people. Perpetually wheedling – I’ve even had a letter from a Krämer relative. I only

go walking in the park – if I go further afield, I go by motor car – I have to be careful.

I am sorry to say that the papers here are scribbling about me a lot – and here in the Palace there are some Transylvanian Romanians, who speak Hungarian – and can you believe it, the queen’s chief marshal is a former Hungarian senior officer.

The attached letters will interest you – how nicely they write to me – but not a word about the painting of course. Ilonka^[1] has not written – which is fine – personally, I don’t plan to write for a long time. Good-for-nothing people – but please tear up these letters. How do they behave with you, I wonder? Have you read anything about me in the papers? You’ll receive an interesting illustrated supplement from London – with my portrait of Princess Elizabeth [10531] in it – who is currently – second in line to the throne – Siklóssy^[2] has also written – and

there has been a suggestion that I could paint in the country palace – They can’t make up their minds regarding Paris – which I am in favour of. Lucy^[3] has written as well – you must spend August with us, Marczi – or the second half of July – to be together with the whole family, and the members you don’t know – the sea is calm in the summer.

Everything is going well here – I have started a second large painting of the queen – this time in a black velvet dress with a diamond tiara – and a blue riband – and – I am very happy with it – it is an important painting [3211] – she is known the world over – I need to produce the perfect portrait – it will be a full-length – and in its simplicity and regal elegance [will be like nothing] I have done before – the king’s portrait is also making good progress [4217] – King Carol only arrives on the 20th [4220] – the family relationships are rather odd here – as I have already mentioned – the National Bank also wants the portrait of the young king – which had great success in London and Paris.

All my time is taken up. I have a lot of letters to write, which will be sent by my secretary – and other things and my family as well – Lucy – came home from her sister’s – and goes to her brother in Dublin tomorrow, where she will see Johny^[4] [sic] – she goes home on the 20th of this month because the portrait of the Prime Minister’s wife [2324] will be taken home – and Lucy is invited to the reception where they will show the portrait to friends. If I paint the young king as well [4218] – then it looks certain that I’ll be here until early March – in which case Lucy – will set off only at the very end of this month – and she wants to meet you in Vienna. I – will send the travel expenses via the Bank in Paris. Lucy would be happy to have the chance to see you. Unfortunately, I am constantly being invited out to lunch here and I often have to dine out as well, with Diplomats – where I meet the local nobility. The queen is exceptionally

kind – and shows an interest in my work – we spend a lot of time together – I had sleepless nights until I made up my mind to abandon the first big painting of the queen [2961] because it was too outwardly opulent – this final one is regal in its understatement – After all, it will be shown in Paris and London.^[5] This painting is going to be one of my very finest works – because of its simplicity – Believe me, Marczi, it is very difficult – to maintain one’s reputation – and at my age to create new and ever better works – and to hang onto the position which I have carved out for myself in the face of my peers and painting the king with all his different medals is very tiring – with the help of a model [4217].

Once my time here is over, I’ll be very glad of a bit of a rest in the Holy Land.

I’ll end this here, old thing, and in the meantime hope to get

Türelmetlenül várok levelet tőled – már két hete hogy itt leszek s nem hallottam tőled – vajjon miként vagy – remélem nem szenvedsz a reumatismussal? Sajnálom nincsen velem a müncheni bankárod czíme – küld el azonnal mert nem tudok intézkedni – A mint féltem – a Margit férje képzeld – idejött valahogy és beküldödt nejétől egy levelet – azonnal intézkedtem – hogy – senkit – tudtom nélkül senkit ne engedjenek a palotába. Sikérültnek képzeld azt mondta – rokonom – azóta magyaroktól jönnek levelek. Rettenets [sic] nép – folyton koldulnak – sőt egy Kramer rokon is írt – csak a

parkban sétálok – kifelé motoron megyek – vigyáznom kell.

Fájdalom itt a lapok firkálnak sokat rólam – még itt a Palotában is vannak Erdélyi Románok akik magyarul beszélnek – s képzeld az első marechalja a királynőnak egy volt magyar főtiszt.

A mellékelt levelek érdeklődni fognak – minő szépen írnak nekem – persze a képről nincsen szó – Ilonka nem írt – de ez jól van így – s magam nagyon sokáig nem írok – Haszontalan népség – de kérlek szakídsd el ezen leveleket – vajjon miként vannak veled szemben. Olvastál e valamit rólam a lapokban. Londonból egy érdekes illustralt fuzetet fogsz kapni – benne Erzsébet hercegnőről festett képem – mert sorrendben – most második az angol trónhoz – Siklóssy írt – s még

azt is ajánlják, hogy a falusi palotában festhetnék – Parisra vonatkozólag még nem határozhatnak – magam fentartom Parisd – Marczi – Lucy is írt, neked kell az augustust – velunk tolteni – vagy július második felét – s együtt lenni az egész családdal, a kiket nem ismersz – nyáron a tenger csöndes.

Itt minden jól megy – a királynőről egy második nagy képet kezdtem – ezuttal – egy fekete Bársony ruhában egy gyemant tiáraval - s egy kék rendjel szalaggal – mely – most teljesen kielégít engem – fontos kép – az egész világ ösmeri – s a legjobbat kell festenem – egész alakja lesz benne – s a maga nagy egyszerűségében előkelő [illegible] meg nem festettem – a király képe is jól halad – Carol király csak 20 kán jönn – itt különösek a családi viszonyok – a mint mondtam – a nemzet Bank a fiatal király képét is akarja – a kinek London Parisban nagy sikere volt.

Minden időm le van foglalva. Sok leveleket kell elintéznem melyeket titkárom küld – s mások valamint családom – Lucym – nővérétől hazajött – s holnap megy át Dublinba bátyjához a hol Johnyt fogja látni – e hó 20 kára haza jönn, mert 21 én a ministerelnök nejének arczképét haza viszik – s Lucy meg van híva – fogadora az arczképet barátoknak bemutatják. Ha a fiatal királyt is festem – bizony lehet hogy marcius első napjaik leszek itt – Lucy – ekkor csak e hó teljes végével útnak indul – s akar veled is Bécsbe találkozni – magam – Parisi Bank által megküldöm az uti költségét. Lucy boldog lenne veled lehetni. Sajnos – itt folyton meghivások vannak ebédre – s vasarnapon magamnak is többször kifele kell vacsorázni a Diplomatáknál – a hol az itteni előkelőségeket látom. A királynő rendkívül

kedves – s érdeklődik a munkám iránt – s sokat vagyunk együtt – álmatlan éjszakáim voltak míg elhatároztam a királynő első nagy képét abban hagyni [sic] mert tulságosan gazdag volt külsőségekben – a végleges a maga nagy egyszerűségében fejedelmi – Hiszen Paris – s Londonba lesz kiállítva. Ezen kép lesz egyik kivalo munkám – mert keresetlen – Bizony nehéz – Marczim – a nevet fentartani – s koromban ujjat s jobbat alkotni – s megállni a helyet melyet kiküzdöttem a collegákkal szemben s végtelen fárasztó a királyt festem a sok rendjellel – s egy modell segítségével.

Ha ezen a tartozkodasomon jól túl leszek jól fog esni a pihenés a szent földön.

Most zárom soraimat öregem s reméllem közben kapok

jó híreket tőled – Bárczynak nem írtam még.

Ha Lucy elé mész – kérlek ne szólj senkinek – tardsd [sic] meg magadnak mert a család Krämer fajtája nem érdemlik meg hogy ezen nemes asszonnyal is találkozzanak.
