When we talk about our goals and write new ones we always think about these important words:

My first academic goal is …

To improve my narrative writing by making it more descriptive so that the reader can picture the characters and setting in their mind.

To achieve my academic goal, I must …

(What specific knowledge, information, skills do you need to acquire?)

• Decide what I am going to write about and plan my writing using a graphic organiser.
• Have a positive attitude towards writing and try my hardest.
• Proof-read and edit my writing using the checklists in my book.
• Use a dictionary and a thesaurus to find more interesting words.
• Fulfil the success criteria for each writing task.
• Use models as examples of good practice.

Compare my most recent writing mileage stories with the ones I wrote at the beginning of the term. My writing tasks will have met the success criteria and be more descriptive.

• Learn to use cues in the text to help me understand what I am reading.
• Read between the lines – when I read I often need to figure out things on my own, the author doesn’t always tell me everything.
• Read for at least 20 minutes each night.
• Discuss what I have read with others so that I can create connections.

To acquire that knowledge, I will use …

• My peers, teacher and parents.
• Fiction and non-fiction books from the library.
• Comprehension worksheets so I can practice drawing conclusions and making inferences.

To determine whether I have achieved my goal, I will …

Do a probe reading test and a CARS test with Miss McGarva at the end of Term 2. I will get all of the inference and conclusion questions correct.
