Open Letter Concerning Academic Freedom, Tenure, and the Future of the New School

We, the undersigned, write to express our concern regarding recent restructuring decisions at the New School, including the dismissal of tenured faculty members and long-serving staff.

For more than a century, the New School has occupied a distinctive place in intellectual life, owing much to its historic support for scholars fleeing authoritarianism and persecution, most notably through its efforts to provide an institutional home for displaced European intellectuals during the 1930s. It has been associated with traditions of independent inquiry, critical scholarship, and democratic debate.

It is therefore troubling to observe the dismissal of tenured faculty members across the school, including Professor Sanjay Reddy of the Department of Economics. Decisions of this kind inevitably raise broader questions concerning the purpose of tenure, the conditions necessary for academic freedom, and the character of the university as an intellectual community. Professor Reddy is an internationally recognized development economist whose scholarship on poverty measurement, global justice, and economic development has had a substantial influence across economics, philosophy, and public policy. He has contributed to major international debates concerning inequality, human welfare, and the ethical foundations of economic analysis. Particularly concerning is the fact that Professor Reddy is the only faculty member selected for termination in the Economics Department. Given his prominent public criticism of administrative decisions and financial management, the absence of a fuller explanation for this decision makes transparency especially important.

Our concern extends beyond any individual appointment. Universities depend upon the accumulation of knowledge across generations, the cultivation of sustained traditions of inquiry, and the capacity of scholars to pursue research, teaching, criticism, and institutional reflection with a reasonable degree of independence. Tenure has long been understood as one of the institutional arrangements through which these conditions are secured. Its significance lies in preserving the intellectual environment upon which serious scholarship depends.

Questions also arise concerning the process by which these decisions were reached. The criteria used in selecting faculty and staff for termination have not been adequately explained to the wider academic community. Nor has there been a sufficiently clear account of how these decisions contribute to the educational and scholarly purposes of the institution or address the difficulties that have prompted them.

These issues carry implications extending beyond a single university. At a time when institutions of higher education face mounting political and economic pressures, decisions affecting tenure and academic freedom acquire broader significance. The New School's reputation was built through its commitment to intellectual independence and its willingness to sustain forms of scholarship that might otherwise have lacked an institutional home. The preservation of that inheritance requires continuing attention to the conditions that make independent inquiry possible.

We therefore call upon the administration and Board of Trustees of the New School to provide a full and transparent account of the principles guiding these decisions, to engage openly with faculty, students, staff, and alumni, and to reconsider actions whose consequences for the intellectual life of the institution are profound and potentially enduring.

The future of the New School is of concern not only to those who study and work there. It matters also to the wider academic and public communities that depend upon universities as places where ideas can be pursued, examined, and contested with freedom and rigor. The questions raised by these dismissals deserve careful public consideration.
