My dear de Laszlo,

I was very sorry to have to send you a telegram this morning to tell you that I was not well enough to come up to town –

I have had a cold and chill on the liver and this has left nausea, pain, & other unpleasant symptoms, and the only thing that gives relief is warmth –

The fog here this morning was

very thick so I dare not risk getting chilled –

I am more than sorry, as should much have liked to have supported you at the R.B.A. & I wanted to see you about other matter –

My wife tells me you have kindly consented to allow your name to be added to the list of patrons of the East Sussex Arts club & have promised to send us a picture in April, this is very good of you & I thank you most warmly – Your distinguished name & support will be a great help & encouragement

to the society & I will inform my committee of this at once, they will I know write & express to you their thanks & appreciation.[1] –

If weather conditions improve I hope to be well enough to come up next Wednesday; I will telephone to see if you can give me an appointment.

[1] Patry had recently been elected President of the East Sussex Arts Club. See DLA017-0050, letter from Edward Patry to de László, 28 November 1930, in which Patry asked if he might add de László’s “name to the list of Patrons with a promise to show some picture here in the Spring.” In de László’s diary entry of 20th April 1931, he noted, “The opening of the East Sussex Arts Club – of which Patry is President - ± invited me to support him with a speech & sent him two of my works – Johny [sic] in blue & my orange seller at Assuan”, DLA125-0001, Philip de László, 1931 diary, private collection, 20 April entry, p. 114.
