De László and his wife Lucy were invited to stay at Villa Fiorentina, near Cannes, by Princess Kara-Georgevich [5857] and they arrived in February 1935. This is one of three landscape studies de László made in the gardens and the only one to record the Palladian villa. Both the present picture and [11781] are much looser studies than [13243], which the artist recorded in his diary as being a memento for himself of his time at Fiorentina.
The Studio Inventory wrongly describes the present picture as having been painted in 1933. Compiled with help from the artist’s studio assistant Francis Harwood after de László’s death, it contains many inaccuracies.
For a fuller description of de László’s visit at Villa Fiorentina, see [11781].
