Course Description

This course is meant for students with Spanish levels between high intermediate and advanced who wish to gain a basic theoretical and practical knowledge of the various linguistic varieties that occur in different linguistic registers: academic language versus informal language, taking into account the study of their historical, geographical and social contributors, as well as influences/contact with other languages ​​of Spain. Similarly, students will gain a general vision of the most relevant aspects of the language which depict the current Spanish of Spain versus Spanish of the Americas and other Spanish speaking places around the world, paying specific attention to the grammatical, lexical, phonetic and pragmatic aspects of the language. With the study of the proposed contents, students will be able to acquire an attitude of respect, understanding and appreciation toward other languages, linguistic varieties, and to other cultures.

Program Schedule

I. Basic theoretical concepts on the study of Spanish and linguistic variation.
II. Levels of formality and informality of the Spanish language: The linguistic norm.

1. Communicative functions: consejos, errands, congratulations, praise, hello, goodbye.

2. Communicative functions: agreement, disagreement, rejection, hypotheses and probability.

III. The Spanish slang and its different contexts of use:

3. Colloquial expressions related to food, clothing, the human body, animals and other semantic
   fields.

IV. Approach to the main current Spanish social differences: Diatopic, diastratic and diafásicas varieties of current Spanish language.

4. Southern Spanish linguistic features

5. Central Peninsular Spanish linguistic features

6. Latin American linguistic features of Spanish

7. Spanish linguistic features elsewhere in the world

Course Evaluation

- Participation: 20%

- Midterm & Final: 50%
