Online PD Session - Software Use and Tech Integration Pedagogies

The online training space is currently used as a space for the facilitator to present a slide deck to participants.  Interaction occurs using the synchronous chat and the voice feature is usually turned off for participants.  There is little interaction with the actual software during the session.  As anyone who has attended a software training can relate with, it is very challenging for participants to remember the sequence of keystrokes and clicks for to perform specific tasks if one is not actually clicking herself.  

Opportunities

I will focus on the design parameters of technology and workspace to flesh out ways to facilitate sessions that are based on active learning theory.

Opportunity 1

Find a way to make the session interactive for attendees who need to see the presentation slides while interacting with the software and session participants.

Solutions

• Use the Chat feature to ask questions that everyone answers when I say “GO!”Participants interact with life software functionality by turning over mouse control to participants
• Allow users to take control of the cursor during screen shares
• Enable audio for all users during screen share so that we don’t have to use the chat feature during sessions.  Use audio via telephone as a backup to enabling Clickmeeting audio.
• Redesign the training slide deck with cues for switching to the live version of the software
• Use Clickmeeting’s screen annotation tools to call attention to key features

Opportunity 2

Find a work around for the limitation of presenting a slide deck OR a screen share.

• Load both the PDF version of the slide deck and the web pages to present during the screen share instead of using presentation mode to show slides
